    Pentax K-m / K2000

    September 26th, 2008

Pentax has announced the Km (or K2000, in the US), a new DSLR that will compete in the entry-level market. The camera, which is built around an image stabilized 10 megapixel sensor, has been designed to be small, light and easy-to-use. The two lenses available in kits with the camera have also been re-engineered to be lighter. We’ve had a chance to use an early example and have prepared an in-depth, ten page preview of the new camera.

According to dpreview.com the price will be friendly enough.

    Price UK: £399 (with 18-55mm DA-L lens)
    £499 (with 18-55mm + 50-200mm DA-L lenses)

Manufacturer also offers nice cash-back! Pentax UK has announced a £30 cash-back offer that will start immediately, bringing the introductory price of the camera body + 18-55mm lens down to £369 and the two-lens kit to £469 after rebate.

Despite the incorporation of a large-sized image sensor (23.5mm by 15.7mm), the PENTAX K-m offers a compact, lightweight body to assure remarkable portability and maneuverability. This was made possible by the development of a compact, lightweight and high-rigidity stainless-steel chassis, the downsizing of the Shake Reduction mechanism and circuit boards, the employment of latest high-density packaging technologies assuring most efficient positioning and layout of various parts, and the repositioning of the battery compartment. The camera grip has also been redesigned to assure firm, comfortable hold of the camera body.

    Stats from official site:
    • Auto sensitivity control up to ISO 3200
    • Effective gradation compensation
    • Large, easy-to-view 2.7-inch LCD monitor
    • Digital filters for unique visual expressions
    • 10 Scene modes, switchable with simple icon selection
Energy-efficient power supply, recording approximately 1,650 images with four AA-size lithium batteries
    • Status screen, displaying camera settings on the LCD monitor on the camera’s back panel for at-a-glance confirmation
    • Index function, for five different types of display and printing modes
Choice of 16-segment multi-pattern metering, center-weighted metering and spot metering to accommodate various photographic applications
    • Simultaneous recording of RAW- and JPEG-format images
    • Compatibility with SD and SDHC memory cards as external data-recording media
    • In-body development of RAW-format images
    • Compatibility with SDM-equipped lenses for quiet, smooth autofocus operation
PENTAX PHOTO Laboratory 3 RAW data processing software and PENTAX PHOTO Browser 3 browser software included

    Pentax Optio D60 Review

    August 29th, 2008

Pentax Optio D60 is excellent in active traveling conditions and good for every day use. It is waterproof, light, stylish with attractive design and reliable.

The main advantage and aim of the camera is to release the photography underwater. It allows shooting even 30 percent deeper than its previous model. It is a good helper for brave adventure seekers. Besides its JIS Class 8 waterproofing feature, it is JIS Class 5 dustproof against dirt, sand and dust. Moreover it functions in risky temperatures such as minus 10 degrees Celsius!

Pentax Optio W60 also has High-Quality Movie mode, Auto-Picture mode, fast Face Detection, Smile Capture, Blink Detection, High Sensivity mode and Underwater Movie mode. Overall here are 24 different modes that help to shoot in these or those conditions. The camera has an easy interface that doesn’t even need to read a manual.

With its 10-megapixel resolution it makes high-detailed photos of good quality. 5x zoom lens allows the camera to shoot any scenes without a problem: landscapes, people, architecture in open space and even various things inside.

Pentax Optio W60 camera has bright wide-angle LCD screen made of anti-reflective crystal seen even in sunlight.

Additional features include macro focus that can shoot from less than one inch distance fron the subject, panorama mode that allows making three shots into one wide photo, SD and SDHC memory cards, decorative frames function, date and time function that allows signing the date when the photo is made, and other important options.

Among the camera disadvantages are noisiness and bad low light photographing. Many people also complain for the absence of lens cover. They sat that though they are protected with layer it becomes dirty anyway.

    Features:

    • Includes camera and USB Cable I-USB7 (39551); AV Cable I-AVC7 (39552); Rechargeable Li-Ion Battery D-LI78 (39741); Battery Charge Cradle D-BC78 (A); AC Plug Cord (39477); Strap O-ST20 (39195); Software CD-ROM S-SW81

    • 10 Megapixels for large, detailed images up to 3648×2736 resolution for stills

    • 5X optical zoom in a slim 1-inch body is equivalent to 28-140mm if it were a 35mm camera

    • Wide-angle 28mm zoom lens ideal for landscape, indoor, or group photos

    • Waterproof to 4m (13 feet) protects from rain and spills, as well as allowing underwater photos and video
