Canon has just announced its new PowerShot SD4000 IS Digital ELPH camera (aka IXUS 300 HS in Europe) featuring 10-megapixel SMOS sensor, 3.8x optical zoom lens, high-speed burst mode and the ability to capture High Definition movies.

The letters HS in the camera title translate as “High-Sensitivity” system, that consists of the back-illuminated SMOS sensor and the bright f/2.0 lens. The former captures more light that enters through the lens, while the latter allows more light to enter, which dramatically improves the camera’s low-light performance and extends the capability of handheld photography.

In addition f/2.0 lens provides for shallower depth of field (when wide open) necessary for portrait photography.

The SD4000 incorporates the DIGIC 4 image processor that enhances image quality in low-light situations and successfully reduces noise at high ISO speeds. It also provides for the camera’s high-speed shooting (up to 8.4 fps).

The camera gives you the ability to manually control aperture and shutter, as well as offers the choice of 15 creative scene modes for effortless photography. Face Detection and Smart Shutter functions are also present.

Except for HD movie capture the camera offer you another bonus - a new Super Slow Motion movie function that allows recording video at a very high frame rate of 240 fps, and playing it back at regular speed so that you can see motion in detail.

Canon Powershot A495 joins the company’s budget camera line-up. It features 10 megapixels of resolution, 3.3x optical zoom lens and 2.5″ LCD Screen and comes to replace the A480 model.

The camera offers you basically point-and-shoot operation. The beginners will be happy with its Smart Auto Mode that uses Scene Detection Technology to automatically adjust picture settings to suit the situation.

There’re also 18 creative scene modes in the A495 to add fun to your photographic experience. These include Portrait, Night Snapshot, Kids & Pets, Indoor, Fireworks, Long Shutter, Portrait, Night Snapshot, Kids & Pets, Low Light (2.0MP), Beach, Foliage, Snow, Sunset, Fireworks, Long Shutter, Poster Effect, and Super Vivid.

The camera can successfully handle difficult lighting conditions thanks to its Low Light mode and i-Contrast technology. The latter ensures that light and dark areas of the image are evenly-exposed and contain plenty of details. And the Motion Detection Technology, in its turn, prevents blurring caused by moving subjects.

The A495 has a sophisticated Advanced Face Detection function and Red-eye Correction. It is enhanced bythe FaceSelf-Timer feature, which makes the camera wait until an additional face enters the frame before the shot is taken.

Camera Reviews:

Photographyblog.com:
The camera seems like a pretty good deal. Don’t expect miracles and you won’t be disappointed. Indeed, for the price you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Cameralabs.com:
The camera offers simple and elegant design as well as superb image quality for the money. But it’s a pity that there’s no optical or sensor-shift image stabilization in it and flash recycling is slow.

The camera is as well affordable and extremely easy to use.

The camera incorporates DIGIC III image processor and a standard size 1/2.3’ image sensor. The lens also has a standard angle of view but it is equipped an optical Image Stabilizer to combat blur caused by camera shake and deliver clear and detailed images.

The camera features point-and-shoot operation and offers its intelligent Smart Auto mode, which is based on Scene Detection Technology. The technology can adjust camera settings to suit the shooting conditions. There’re also 18 different scenes in the camera.

The A3100 uses the I-Contrast technology to improve the picture quality. It brightens darker sections of the image so that they are detail-packed while ensures that bright areas of the image (like sky) are not overexposed.

The PowerShot A3100 makes use of Face Detection Technology as well as of the Face Select & Track function to give priority to one face over the others in a group. The Smart Flash Exposure function, in its turn, can intelligently adjust flash exposure to suit the subject and the shooting conditions and thus make your photos look natural.

Photographyblog.com:
There’s nothing here to get too excited about, but the combination of ease-of-use, advanced features for beginners and solid image quality is a compelling one.

Digitalcamerareview.com:
The camera offer first rate optics as well as excellent image quality and a very good feature set. Though no manual exposure controls are available and battery life could be better.
