    Nokia 6110 Navigator

    February 15th, 2007

At 3GSM, Nokia introduced the new Nokia 6110 Navigator, a navigation-enabled mobile phone designed for the mass market. The Nokia 6110 Navigator brings together GPS (Global Positioning System) and AGPS (Assisted Global Positioning System) functionality with always-on mobile connectivity in a feature-rich, compact device.

The Nokia 6110 Navigator features full personal navigation experience with integrated maps, routing and navigation available with the click of the phone’s one-touch Navigator key. With the Nokia 6110 Navigator, consumers can quickly and easily view their current location on the map, search for destinations, find specific routes, or locate services such as restaurants, hotels or shops that are nearby. Featuring full turn-by-turn 3D navigation, the Nokia 6110 Navigator suggests the best route to follow to reach a location by car or on foot. Clear instructions by voice guidance and turn arrows on a map ensure finding the fastest way to the destination.

The Nokia 6110 Navigator comes with a local map pre-installed on the memory card ready for immediate navigation. Additional maps and content - such as traffic information, weather services and travel guides - can be purchased online. Additional maps can be conveniently transferred to the phone by using the Nokia Map Manager application included. The maps also show thousands of points of interest, such as restaurants, hotels, shops or other services nearby the location, including phone numbers and web addresses for calling and browsing directly with the phone. And, because the map’s information is located in the mobile phone, it can be shared with family or friends with the touch of a button.

    Samsung P110

    February 14th, 2007

There are two striking features on the Samsung P110 - one is the multiway hinge that allows the display to be moved into just about any orientation you might need, and the second is the two-way keyboard which provides standard numeric functions one way and a QWERTY keypad the other way. This is not quite the first time we’ve seen this arrangement, the short-lived Motorola MPx did something a little similar, but it is an unusual approach and it certainly makes the SGH-P110 stand out from the crowd.

At the time of going to press, the full technical specifications of the Samsung P110 are now known, but we do know that it has a 2.1″ 176×220 pixel switching display, a basic VGA resolution camera, a media player and stereo Bluetooth, 25MB of internal memory, and instant messaging support. Underneath is a tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900 MHz device with GPRS and EDGE. The SGH-P110 measures 91 x 47 x 20mm.

    Nokia E90 Communicator

    February 13th, 2007

The Nokia E90 Communicator is the latest in a long line of  communicator devices, and is the replacement for the Nokia 9500 which was announced three years ago.

The Communicator series of devices have always had the unfortunate nickname of “the brick”, and the Nokia E90 continues in that tradition. At a hefty 210 grams, the E90 is actually 20 grams lighter than the 9500, but 38 grams heavier than the 9300i. Nokia have done a remarkable job with size though - when viewed from the front (see left), the E90 is about the height and thickness of the compact 9300/9300i while retaining the same width as the 9500 at 132 x 57 x 20mm.

Inside the E90 is a display with an impressive 800×352 pixels resolution in 16 million colours, not unlike the panel on the Nokia N800, this is up from 640×200 pixels on the earlier models. The external display is now 240×320 pixels (up from 128×128), and pretty much all of the E90’s functions can be controlled from the front cover, rather than the 9500/9300/9300i which allowed access to basic phone functions only. The 800 pixel wide display is ideal for no-compromise web access, although it doesn’t have touchscreen support.

An important feature is the Nokia E90 Communicator’s inbuilt GPS function. This allows for more than just basic location-based services, as Nokia are going to make it’s “Nokia Maps” application available. Although this seems to be a free SatNav (satellite navigation) package, it’s worth remembering that a lot of the value added features require a network connection which might incur data costs.

Nokia say that the E90 will initially be available during Q2 2007 with full production coming onstream in Q3, although from past experience we wouldn’t be surprised if it was late. All of this technology comes at a price, at the E90 will cost around €800 / £500 / $1000 before tax and subsidy, around the same cost as the 9500 at launch.
