Panasonic has announced the Lumix G Vario 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 ASPH Mega O.I.S. image stabilized lens as a kit lens to Micro Four Thirds Digital cameras. It offers an equivalent zoom range of 28-84mm to suit various types of photography from dynamic landscaped to portraiture.

This compact and lightweight lens has similar specs list to the 14-45mm G System standard zoom lens, but comes in a slightly larger body and without the image stabilization on/off switch.

The lens’s optical construction combines 12 elements in 9 groups including 1 aspherical lens to minimize distortion even at wide end and multi-coated lens elements to reduce ghosts and flare. The manufacturer also promises the excellent contrast at entire zoom range.

The LUMIX G VARIO 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 ASPH incorporates Panasonic’s MEGA O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer), which compensates for camera shake at slower shutter speeds and ensures blur-free images thus extending handheld shooting capabilities in low light.

The lens adopts an inner focus system driven by a stepping motor, for smooth operation. It delivers minimum focus distance of 30 cm even at full zoom and maximum photographic magnification of 0.32x. There’re seven aperture blades in the lens to form a circular aperture diaphragm, which helps produce an attractive smoothness in out-of-focus areas.

The lens will be available from June 2010 with the new DMC-G2, DMC-G10 cameras or as a standalone lens.
