The Sigma Corporation announced the new Sigma 17-70 mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM wide angle lens. With the large aperture of f/2.8 at the 17 mm focal length, it can be used in various situations, for instance, fro portrait, sport, macro and general photography.
It features optical stabilizer (OS) function that makes it possible to use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible. The compensation will be visible in the view finder for easy check of accurate focus.
If you camera body is equipped with its own anti-shake function (Sony and Pentax mount), you can still make use of the lens’s OS function.
The 17-70mm DC Macro HSM has a minimum focusing distance of 22 cm (8.7in) throughout the entire zoom range and maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.7, which shows its best in close-up photography. Also, a rounded 7 blade diaphragm creates an attractive blur of the out of focus areas.
In terms of optical construction, the lens consists of 17 elements 13 groups with three aspherical lenses and one ELD (Extraordinairy Low Dispersion) glass element. Such glass provides good correction for all types of aberrations. It also offers Super Multi-Layer Coating to reduce flare and ghosting.
The letters HSM is the title mean the incorporation of the Hyper Sonic Motor, which results in a quiet and high speed AF. The inner focus system eliminates front lens rotation, making the lens particularly suitable for using the supplied petal-type lens hood and circular polarizing filters.

This is an affordable general-purpose lens to replace a standard kit lens, but still it cannot deliver excellent flatness of field and edge-to-edge sharpness and cannot offer macro capabilities.
