Canon announced the launch of the PowerShot G11 digital compact camera, successor to the award winning PowerShot G10. The new model features 1/1.7 inch sensor, 12 megapixels of resolution and 28mm wide-angle 5x optical zoom lens.
Key innovations on the PowerShot G11 include a high-resolution vari-angle LCD screen and greatly improved noise reduction.
A new 2.8-inch vari-angle PureColor II VA LCD is perfect for creative and macro photography, it has a wide viewing angle and 461k dot resolution with natural colour accuracy. Moreover, screen brightness can be adjusted.
Canon’s new Dual Anti-Noise System combines the enhanced DIGIC 4 image processing technology to reduce noise and increase quality equal to 2-stops. And the G11’s lens features optical Image Stabilizer (IS) for handheld shots at much slower shutter speeds (4-stops) than conventional non-IS models. It allows photographers to capture full resolution images in difficult low-light conditions.
DIGIC 4 image processing technology includes Intelligent Contrast Correction technology - i-Contrast - which optimizes the dynamic range of images, to help prevent highlight blowout, while retaining low-light detail.
The PowerShot G11 also includes a built-in 3-stop Neutral Density (ND) filter and white balance fine control which enables photographers to be more creative in the field.
Alongside with full manual controls, the camera features Smart Auto Mode with Scene Detection Technology a great asset to those who love to point-and-shoot without worrying about the technical details.
The PowerShot G11 can also be used with a wide range of Canon accessories, including some Speedlite and Macro Twin Lite flashes, the Speedlite Transmitter ST-E2, Speedlite Bracket and Remote Switch RS-60E3.
The G11 gives you mostly everything you’d want in one neat package. With this camera Canon is trusting the camera’s target audience to realize that there’s more to digital photography than ever increasing helpings of megapixels with each successive product.
The camera delivers excellent image quality, good AF, shutter and ISO performance. Though its viewfinder is inaccurate and the camera itself is large and heavy compared to most compacts. And expensive as well.
Camera enthusiasts get a lot with the Canon G11: high image quality, good lens quality, a swiveling LCD screen and a lens that starts at a useful wide-angle of 28mm equivalent. Moreover, the camera is built sturdily, and has excellent controls.
Photos produced by the G11 have the plenty of detail, vibrant colors were, and with less noise and quite a bit less noise reduction artifacting than your typical compact camera. Purple fringing levels were low.
If you’re tempted to buy the G11 for its image quality, flexibility of lens range or high level of manual control on a compact camera, the G11’s talent is to offer all of these things.
Alternatives/Rivals: Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3.
