    Casio Exilim EX-Z300

    November 28th, 2008

Earlier we discussed a 9.1 megapixel Casio Exilim EX-Z250. Today we continue talking about Casio’s ultra-compacts and draw our attention to the Exilim EX-Z300, a 10.1 effective megapixel with 4x optical zoom lens that covers a 28 to 112mm zoom range.

Thanks to Casio’s original image processing technologies, these cameras have the ability to capture high-resolution images with reduced noise in pictures taken at high sensitivity levels. Users can enjoy a wide range of shooting options, from wide angle photography to telephoto shooting.

    Both cameras are renowned for:

    1. Handheld night scene: clear, bright photographs of both people and night scenes thanks to the compensation for camera shake.
    2. Lighting function: these cameras are able to automatically detect such situations and select just the right balance between light and dark, so both people and backgrounds are evenly exposed.
    3. Makeup function: - helps users to smooth facial skin, or reduce the depth of facial shadows in sunlight. The higher-end model EX-Z300 also has a “Makeup button” that allows effects to be applied with one touch.

EX-Z300 only possesses Multi-Motion technology, it can take a series of shots of a moving subject and combine them in a single photo (image size must be set to 3 megapixels.)

The EX-Z300 comes equipped with a high definition movie recording function, which allows beautiful movies with an image size of 1280×720 pixels.

    Casio Exilim EX-300Z specifications:

    • 1/2.3″-type Sensor
    • CCD Shift Anti-shake and digital Anti-Shake DSP
    • Stylish, durable and light-weight metal body
    • 3.0-inch TFT color LCD (Super Clear LCD),
    • Face Detection
    • “Auto Shutter” technology for sharp portraits
    • CCD shift anti-shake system
    • 38 “BEST SHOT” scene modes for various shooting situations
    • Attach audio memos to still images at capture or later.
    • 9-point contrast-detection autofocus system
    • AF modes: Multi, Tracking or Spot AF.
    • ISO sensitivity from 64 to 3200
    • Built-in flash
    • Red Eye Reduction.
    • Li-ion rechargeable battery for up to 300 shots
    • 38.5 Megabytes of internal memory

    Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28

    November 28th, 2008

The new Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 is the successor to the popular, one-year-old FZ18 camera. It retains 18x zoom lens, now equivalent to a slightly wider-angle 27-486mm focal length, the optical image stabilizer, face detection, RAW mode and ISO 1600 at full image resolution from its predecessor. And offers an increase to 10 megapixels, larger 2.7-inch LCD screen, new Venus Engine IV processing, and updated Intelligent Auto mode with newly added AF Tracking function.

The FZ28 is a bridge-style compact camera, looking just like a true DSLR at first glance, but featuring a non-interchangeable lens instead.

As is the norm with this type of camera the DMC FZ28 has a selection of manual exposure controls as well as other more advanced controls such as bracketing, a high speed burst mode, RAW capture and manual focusing. Also catering for the beginner are a total of 21 scene modes, including new Pin Hole and Film Grain modes that add unique, film-camera-like effects to your images.

The Intelligent Auto Mode now includes Intelligent Exposure, which increases exposure only in the under-exposed areas of the image, Digital Red-eye, which automatically detects and removes red-eye, and AF Tracking, which continually tracks a moving subject keeping it in focus.

The auto-focus system is fast to determine focus and there’s no shutter delay to speak of when you take a shot.

Panasonic DMC FZ28 Specification & Features:

    • An anti-shake system, dubbed Mega O.I.S
    • An electronic viewfinder (EVF) with a dioptre adjustment function
    • File Formats: JPEG, RAW, RAW+JPEG
    • Zoom: 18x (32.1x at low resolution)
    • All Manual Controls, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority
    • Shutter Speed 60 to 1/2000 seconds
    • Aperture Wide: F2.8 - F8.0 Tele: F4.4 - F8
    • Sensitivity: Auto, 100 - 1600 (High Sensitivity Mode: 1600 - 6400)
    • Much-improved white-balance options
    • White Balance Adjustment (Blue/Amber and Magenta/Green bias)
    • Colour Temperature option
    • Picture Adjustment: Contrast, Sharpness, Saturation, Noise Reduction
    • Pop-up Flash
    • Flash output Adjustment
    • Flash Range 8.5m
    • 22 Shooting Modes with further options within a selected mode
    • Burst Shooting Mode
    • Macro Focus: 1cms
    • Manual Focus
    • Backlight Compensation
    • Unlimited consecutive shooting
    • Conversion lens compatible

In summary the DMC-FZ28 is outwardly very similar to its predecessor, but slightly easier to use, especially for beginners thanks to the improved Intelligent Auto mode.

    Samsung SL310W

    November 27th, 2008

Steves Digicams has reviewed Samsung SL310W, a 13.6 megapixel compact digital camera with a 3.6x wide-angle optical zoom lens which significantly improves the user’s ability to photograph more of a desired scene.

Samsung SL310W features Dual Image Stabilization, which combines both Optical Image Stabilization and Digital Image Stabilization systems. This is a useful feature that helps reduce the blur found in images as a result of vibrations, hand shake or other unexpected movements in order to capture crisp, clear images.

Its highlights include Self Portrait mode - SL310W automatically detects the user’s face, adjust focus and exposure, and will only allow a photo to be taken if the subject is centered in the frame; Face Detection technology - it detects up to nine faces and automatically adjusts focus and exposure to ensure better composition and image quality; Smile Shot - automatically triggers the SL310W to take a photo only when a subject is smiling; and Blink Detection -prevents a photo from being taken if the camera recognizes that a subject’s eyes are closed.

The SL310W has a very advanced movie mode. Users can pause, and then resume filming of video clips without having to save the clips as individual files. Moreover, users can operate the camera’s 28mm wide-angle optical zoom and engage OIS and DIS while recording.

Being a user-friendly camera, the SL310W offers Function Description and a Photo Help Guide. Function Description automatically provides a brief description of each setting when scrolling through the menus, helping a user determine which setting is appropriate for their current shooting scenario. The Photo Help Guide is another component incorporated into the camera, which offers a guided tour of how to take better images as well as easy-to-follow tips instructing how to obtain excellent results.

    SL310W Features:

    • Resolution of images up to 4224×3168 pixels
    • Samsung 3.6x F2.8 optical zoom lens
    • Capture MPEG4 video at 800×592 (20fps), 640×480 or 320×240 (15 or 30fps) w/audio
    • Movie stabilization
    • Voice Recording function (up to 10 hours)
    • Auto, Program, Manual and 12 scene modes
    • Adjustable ISO, white balance, and metering
    • Adjustable sensitivity from ISO 80 - 3200
    • Powerful Effects: Color and Image Adjustment (Sharpness, Saturation, Contrast)
    • Continuous or Burst capture mode
    • Auto Exposure Bracketing
    • Motion Capture shooting
    • Macro focus as close as 2 inches (5cm) from the lens
    • 30MB of internal memory

In conclusion I should admit that Samsung SL310W is highlighted by features that are commonly found on more expensive digital cameras.
