Olympus Stylus 850SW Review

July 9th, 2008

Stylus 850SW.jpgWith the rugged and stylish 8-megapixel Olympus Stylus 850SW, Olympus proves that you do not need to be a windsurfer or snowboarder to appreciate a camera that is immune to five-foot falls, works in freezing snowstorms, swims with dolphins and survives everyday life with kids. Designed for the adventurer in all of us, new Olympus Stylus 850SW weathers harsh conditions in five stylish colors that make it attractive in action while it captures brilliant images to last a lifetime.

The shock-absorbing technology designed into the Stylus 850 SW minimizes the impact delivered to the lens and circuitry when the camera is dropped from heights up to 5 feet. Whether the camera slips out of a backpack or a toddler drops it down a staircase, the Stylus 850 SW can take life’s hard knocks.

Olympus Stylus 850SW performs as well underwater as it does on land because its lightweight, aluminum exterior is matched with interior rubber gaskets and O-rings to seal out the elements. It can take photos while being fully submerged to depths of approximately 10 feet (3 meters). The inclusion of four preset underwater scene modes makes the Stylus 850 SW perfect for snorkeling or a day in the pool. It also features a water-repellant lens coating to prevent water droplets from forming on the lens to get crystal-clear shots no matter how wet the shooting environment.

Olympus offers a number of optional accessories, specifically designed for Olympus Stylus 850SW. For users looking to capture their underwater adventures in depths beyond 10 feet (3 meters), Olympus offers the PT-041 underwater housing, which enables users to take pictures in depths to approximately 130 feet (40 meters). A red floating wrist strap frees consumers’ hands when swimming or chasing the next big wave, and a trendy silicone skin protects the camera from scratches.

Olympus also offers premium cases in a variety of new colors, including cream plaid and gray plaid as well as a new brown leather, which features a masculine wallet design. The premium cases are also available in black, pink and red leather. Durable, sporty neoprene cases are perfect for active or outdoor expeditions, and they are available in black and olive. The new olive color neoprene case features a carabineer, which can be hooked to a bag, swimming suit or hiking shorts. A neoprene armband case is the ideal accompaniment for surfing, hiking or any activity where having free hands is a must.

Features:

  • 8.0-megapixel CCD captures enough detail for photo-quality 16 x 22-inch prints
  • 3x optical zoom; Face Detection
  • 2.5-inch HyperCrystal LCD; Perfect Shot Preview mode
  • Waterproof to 10 feet; shockproof to 5 feet
  • Stores images on xD Picture Cards (not included)

Canon PowerShot A570 IS Review

July 9th, 2008

PowerShot A570IS.jpgEven when the kids can’t sit still and the light is less than ideal, the amazing, Canon PowerShot A570IS lets you capture life’s special moments — perfectly. Optical Image Stabilizer Technology keeps images crisp even when you’re zoomed way in. The ISO 1600 and High ISO Auto settings reduce blur when the lights are down low. Plus, the A570 IS is packed with easy-to-use creative and convenient features you’ll love.

DIGIC III features Face Detection AF/AE, which finds multiple faces in the frame and sets the most suitable focus point, when the shutter button is pressed halfway. And an additional new feature, Face Detection FE adjusts the flash, based on a person’s face on the screen. Exposure and flash are controlled to ensure proper illumination of both the faces and the overall scene, eliminating the common problem of darkened or overexposed faces.

Red-eye Correction detects and automatically corrects red-eye during playback for both regular and flash photography. In unusual cases where red-eye is not automatically detected, in Canon PowerShot A570IS it can easily be corrected manually during playback mode from the LCD screen.

iSAPS Technology is an entirely original scene-recognition technology developed for digital cameras by Canon. Using an internal database of thousands of different photos, iSAPS works with the fast DIGIC III Image Processor to improve focus speed and accuracy of Canon PowerShot A570IS, as well as exposure and white balance.

Power on the go with two AA-size batteries. You don’t need to worry about running out or recharging batteries. Since AA-size batteries can be purchased at any store, simply get new ones locally.

Like the A540, overall processing speed is very fast unless you’re taking flash pictures (and then you should expect about 4-6 seconds between flashes depending on battery level and what flash strength the camera selected). Note that flash time is significantly better with high-capacity rechargeable NiMh batteries than with standard AAs. And the speed of the user interface (especially during playback) is very fast.

Features:

  • 7.1-megapixel CCD captures enough detail for photo-quality 15 x 20-inch prints
  • DIGIC III Image Processor with improved Face Detection technology and Red-eye Correction
  • Clear, high-resolution 2.5-inch LCD for easy on-camera viewing
  • ISO 1600 and High ISO Auto to reduce image blur and expand low-light shooting capability
  • Print/Share Button for easy direct printing and downloading

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS5K Review

July 2nd, 2008

Lumix DMC-FS5K.jpgPanasonic Lumix DMC-FS5K combines easy operation with a slim and sleek look, enabling both beginner and advanced users to take beautiful digital photos with a camera they can slip in their pocket. Featuring 10-megapixel resolution and a 30mm wide-angle Leica DC lens with 4x optical zoom, the FS5 also has Intelligent Auto Mode, an advanced intuitive system of technologies that help users take better photos more easily.

Additionally, the fourth generation high-performance image-processing Venus Engine IV LSI helps produce higher-quality pictures with an advanced signal processing system. It adds a new high-performance noise reduction system that helps reproduce even the most delicate parts of images naturally and without color bleeding. The Venus Engine IV reduces shutter release time lag while still enabling high-resolution picture taking, making it easier to capture spur-of-the-moment photo opportunities.

Other features of Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS5K include approximately 50 MB of internal memory and a 2.5-inch LCD — perfect for easy-to-see viewing of images. Furthermore, the FS5 features an Intelligent LCD, which detects the lighting condition and controls the brightness level of the LCD to offer optimal clarity in any situation, whether dark or light; indoors or outdoors.

Intelligent Scene Selector senses the ambient conditions, recognizes the shooting environment and will automatically select the appropriate scene mode from: Scenery, Portrait, Macro, Night Portrait or Night Scenery mode. This intuitive technology, helps the consumer use the most common scene modes that are built into the camera, but often go unused, without making any manual adjustments.

The battery and SD card placement is well designed (meaning, next to each other with one panel opening to deal with). Trigger button is significant and zoom in and out switch is where you’d want it. The screen IS the back of Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS5K, which grants a viewing area that’s impressive. It’s solid in feel and again, small enough for the pocket, bag, and hand palm.

Features:

  • 10-megapixel resolution captures enough detail for poster-sized prints
  • 4x wide-angle optical zoom; Mega Optical Image Stabilized
  • 2.5-inch Intelligent LCD screen; Face Detection
  • Intelligent ISO; Intelligent Scene Selector
  • 50 MB built-in memory; captures images to SD memory cards (not included)
