    Adobe Photoshop Express Review

    March 30th, 2008
    Adobe Photoshop Express Review

Today the crowd at Photoshop World got a quick preview of Photoshop Express, a new application currently in development at Adobe. First hinted at by Adobe CEO Bruce Chizen some six months ago, Photoshop Express isn’t meant to duplicate/replace Photoshop CS3 or Photoshop Elements. Rather, it’s a new member of the Photoshop family that’s meant to make Adobe imaging technology immediately accessible to large numbers of people.

Earlier this year, Adobe introduced Premiere Express, a free, Flash-based online video editor for creating mash-ups and remixes. Anyone using Photobucket, MTV.com and YouTube’s TestTube site can take Premiere Express for a spin. Photoshop Express, though not yet publicly available, aims to offer a similarly easy, approachable experience for image editing.

Adobe Sr. VP John Loiacono showed that it was possible to adjust an image just by rolling over the different versions shown at the top, previewing the results & then clicking the desired degree of modification. I’ll post more info as it becomes available.

The public beta can be used free of charge using nothing more than your browser with the latest Flash 9 player and a broadband connection to the Internet. Even better, there’s no manual to read (or even a Read Me), nothing to install and nothing to update.

Free, lots of storage, lots of cool Photoshop-inspired effects and tools, share your photos with your friends. It’s what Flickr would be if it was created by a multimedia company instead of your regular Web 2.0 crowd.

Kudos to Adobe for getting out there in the Software-as-a-Service market with another cool Flex-based offering, showing what the technology can really do.

Update: You can see the quick onstage demo of Photoshop Express in Terry White’s latest Creative Suite Podcast (direct link to video). The demo starts around 16:10 mark.

    Olympus Digital Zuiko Lenses Review

    March 30th, 2008
    Olympus Digital Zuiko Lenses Review

Olympus is developing three new professional-grade interchangeable lenses for the Olympus E-System cameras that adhere to the FourThirds standard. Each of the Olympus ZUIKO DIGITAL lenses boast exceptionally wide, fixed apertures. Professional photographers can therefore look forward to shooting performance that allows considerably more versatility and efficiency. The Olympus ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 14-35mm (28-70mm on 35mm format) 1:2.0 and Olympus ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 35-100mm (70-200mm on 35mm format) 1:2.0 will be the world’s first interchangeable lenses to feature an aperture of 1:2.0 across their entire zooming range.

Used together, these two lenses give photographers the freedom to apply a 1:2.0 aperture from a wide-angle focal length of 14mm (28mm on 35mm format) to telephoto 100mm (200mm on 35mm format).

Meanwhile, the Olympus ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 90-250mm (180-500mm on 35mm format) 1:2.8 also will impress with high brightness right up to its ultra-telephoto extreme focal length of 250mm (500mm on 35mm format). The power of this lens becomes especially apparent in situations where fast framing, such as in sports or nature photography, is necessary.

Olympus ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 14-35mm 1:2.0 features:

    • Ultra-bright 1:2.0 fixed aperture
    • Super ED and ED glass elements for absolute minimum chromatic aberration
    • Splash and dust proof construction to enhance reliability
    • 2.5x wide-angle zoom performance 14-35mm (28-70mm on 35mm format)

Olympus ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 35-100mm 1:2.0 features:

    • Ultra-bright 1:2.0 fixed aperture
    • Super ED and ED glass elements for absolute minimum chromatic aberration
    • Splash and dust proof construction to enhance reliability
    • 2.9x zoom performance 35-100mm (70-200mm on 35mm format)

    Sony DSC-T300 Review

    March 30th, 2008
    Sony DSC-T300 Review

The new model Sony DSC-T300 incorporates Sony’s new intelligent scene recognition (iSCN), a technology that allows the camera to analyze shooting conditions and automatically select the optimal settings for the best photo results. In iSCN mode, the camera can automatically detect up to five scenes, and choose the best setting for the situation.

In advanced iSCN mode, the camera will shoot using the user’s settings and then will automatically step in and take a second shot with optimized settings. If the camera determines that the user’s settings are best, then a second photo is not taken.

The camera’s updated face detection technology can differentiate between the faces of children and adults. Simply select “child priority” or “adult priority,” and the camera will automatically detect up to eight faces in the camera frame, adjusting focus, exposure, white balance and flash for the subjects that matter most.

New controls on this model include: semi-manual focus, which lets the user set the focus range; improved auto focusing system to cover macro ranges in auto mode; and the addition of Sony’s D-Range Optimizer Plus mode that uses a higher image correction algorithm to retrieve more picture detail in bright highlights and dark shadows caused by high-contrast shooting.

    Features:

    • 10.1 million effective pixels
    • Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar
    • 5x optical zoom
    • 3.5 in (8.8cm) Touch-sensitive Hybrid TFT LCD
    • USB 2.0 High Speed
    • 149 g (5.3 oz)
    • 94 x 59.3 x 21.4 mm (3.7 x 2.3 x 0.8 in)
