Photographer Interview: Malligai
We continue our tradition to interview shotaddict contest winners. The hero of the current post is a winner of several contests known as Malligai to shotaddict members.
1. Who are you? Please give a brief background information.
I am a molecular geneticist with a Ph. D. from University of Michigan. I am an avid gardener and a freelance writer. I have published a huge number of articles on a variety of subject. I have a website: www.lakshmi-sridharan.com. Photography is one of my several hobbies.
2. How long have you been doing photography?
Nearly for three decades, though not seriously.
3. How did you start doing photography? What got you interested in it?
I travel a lot. Initially, I took photographs of various places, art festivals, gardens etc. just to show them to my parents living in India. It was some what like a travelogue. As a grad student at the Univ. of Michigan, I used to process BW film and print in the dept. of Biology dark room. In the past few years I have been photographing mostly for my articles on gardening.
4. Do you earn living from photography or you do photography as your hobby/ your half time job?
Photography is my hobby, however, I would love to showcase my photos one day and make money.
5. What’s your day job?
Teaching and research
6. Do you have special education? Did you take courses or go to a school learn photography?
No
7. Are you specializing in a particular area of photography? What is your favourite type of photography?
I love photographing insects and flowers
8. Who are your big photographic influences?
No one in particular. I like Ansel Adam’s photography
9. How do you educate yourself? Do you read special literature, visit photography galleries? What photo books/magazines do you have on your bookshelf?
Mostly online. Talk to some of my friends who are good at photography
10. What are your favorite places/objects to shoot?
Insects and flowers
11. What equipment and software (camera(s), lenses, film, etc.) do you use?
Olympus Camedia 700 UZ. Software for editing: Olympus Master 1 and 2, Adobe Photoshop and a couple more
12. What is your opinion on post-processing, especially enhancing pictures?
“Camera does not lie” is no longer true. Post processing can bring out the artist in a photographer. I have nothing against it.
13. What advice would you give someone who is interested in photography and wants to improve their photography skills?
Play with the camera. Look at the photographs of others. Try to be creative
14. What’s the most challenging aspect of photography for you? What’s the best part of it?
The creative artistic side of photography.
