How To Choose Your Best Photo
Digital photography is cheap they say. And digital photographers usually have an enormous amount of images in their collections. How to choose best images from hundreds of good ones? That is the question which many photographers ask. There is no strict rules which allow us to estimate an artistic merit of a photograph, but there are still a few criteria which can help the photographer to choose best photos.
- HOW ONE CAN DEVELOP ONE’S EYE AND IMPROVE ARTISTIC TASTE
Look at professional images, paintings, sculptures: visit galleries, museums, exhibitions, look through catalogs of outstanding photographers, subscribe to a good photography magazine.
A GOOD PHOTO IS NOT ABOUT TECHNIQUE ONLY
It is natural that if you look at a photograph, you will pay attention at its technical side. But you also should try to guess what is the photographer’s intention. Think if the photographer managed to render the message and look which means which s/he used to transfer this idea.
- PAY ATTENTION AT DETAILS
Look at the image attentively and try to analyze every detail, every millimeter of a photo under consideration. Remember that these are details what create a masterpiece.
- LEARN HOW TO EXAMINE IMAGES
First look at the image to get a general impression of it. Then take a more precise look and try to find a starting point, which can be in the centre of an image, on its left or right side. Then thoroughly examine the whole surface. You can start with the upper left corner or with the most interesting point in the picture and study each detail moving your eyes in a circle.
- GET RID OF UNNECESSARY DETAILS
If within a frame there is something that distracts the viewer’s attention from the main idea, it is better to crop it out. It will help people to concentrate on the main subject and catch the message.
- FIND THE BEST FACE EXPRESSION
If you want to get a feedback from your viewers, you should be just with them. It is extremely important with portraits. Emotions that you want to render with the photograph should be true. If your subject smiles, then the smile should be natural, if it cries, it should also be true-to-life.
- SHADOWS AND LIGHTS
Be careful with this technique, because while shadows can add vitality to the image, they can well spoil it by making it too dark or light.
- BE UNDERSTANDABLE
Photography is an art of painting by light. Try to make your photos understandable, otherwise you will have to explain your intention by words. You can use any technique to make your photos comprehensible: play with shadows, colors, light, cropping tool, etc.
