The Secret Of Car Photography
How can you shoot a car? You can choose one of the two approaches to car photography:
- Look in the viewfinder and shoot everything interesting you see. Take hundreds of shots from different angles.
- Or you can thoroughly plan a shot in your head first and only afterwards take your cam and start shooting.
If you are new to car photography, you’d better start with deciding what kind of photos you would like to take at the moment. It can be lyrical, high-tech, or macro photography. Or you can create a landscape or a nude composition in your car photos. An interesting car plus your creativity and you have a chance to take a serious of outstanding images.
Think of a car as of something animate. Try to reveal its personality concentrating on the lines of headlights, on the mirrors and reflections.
Concentrate on the details and you will get interesting and original photos. Here are a few tips to help you notice small details in your car.
TEXTURES AND SURFACES
At first sight it may seem that modern autos are not rich in various textures, but if we look closer, we will find a wide range of interesting patterns. It can be rubber, leather, etc. Train your eye to notice interesting details and compose a shot.
- A good example of texture car composition is a combination of contrasting surfaces. Combine a very smooth varnished or chromized texture with a concrete or brick wall in the background to create an interesting shot.
- Try to shoot motorcycles. Leather, chrome, a wide range of colors will make a beautiful photo. And a polarizing filter helps you to emphasize bright colors and contrast is a perfect subject for auto photography session as well.
REFLECTION
You can shoot reflections of people, landscapes, sky, etc. in the windows and mirrors, fenders and hoods of beautiful cars. Poles, houses, wires and similar objects look great reflecting in a shiny car surface. They create perspective and add dynamics to an image.
In fact, almost any outer car part gives a reflection if you know how to use a polarizing filter. Remember that the filter allows accentuating desired details and muting all undesired elements.
When shooting reflections in the car, make sure there is no dust, fingerprints, or other dirt particles, which will be very well seen in photos and are not so easy to get rid of.
