7 Tips to Win Pet Photo Contest
Animal photography is similar to children photography in a way. Animals like children do not stay still for a minute, they are completely unpredictable. You can easily come close to them, but there is no guarantee that they will allow you to photograph them.
That is why in animal photography it is not equipment that matters, but your patience! You can’t control them, and they won’t pose for you. You have only a second or two to take a great shot, or it will be too late.
There are several ways that may help you to get a better photo – you should know well how physically strong your animal is, what kind of body build it has, and what are its habits. Always have your camera ready and be PATIENT!
General tips on photographing your pet.
1. If you want to have a professional photo of your pet, you can take your pet to a photography studio, or create a studio at home. Photographing in studio is certainly more convenient for the photographer, but your pet will feel more comfortable and looks more natural at home in its habitual surrounding.
2. Besides, you can always get better results if you photograph your animal yourself, because you know it better: you know its habits and favourite places in the house.
3. Give your pet some time to calm down. Before you start photographing, the pet should get used to your presence to behave in a natural way.
4. Wide-angle lenses often produce better results, especially if you shoot from below. Thus, if you work outside, the background of a photograph will be the sky.
5. As in any portrait, the most important element of a pet photo is the subject’s eyes. It is important that the eyes were well in-focus. Also, make sure that the whole head is sharp as well.
6. If you take photos as your dog swims, don’t hurry to take your cam away as soon as your pet is out of water. Set a short shutter speed and shoot your doggy when it shakes off.
7. Photos of a pet and its owner are always look good. Such portraits show what kind of relations a pet and its owner have. You can sit down or knee down to be on the same level with your pet. Or you can always take your animal in your hands or put it on your shoulder.
