UV Filter in Digital Photography
All photographers, even young and inexperienced, know how important some photographic equipment for final results. In most cases you cannot go without a tripod, a flash and different lenses.
But not all aspiring photographers use a color filter in their practice, while it is one of the most complicated, diverse and interesting photography equipment. For the last 150 years there has been invented a great deal of different photography filters, which are used to filter, diffract and degrade the light and can solve various classical problems. Of course, we can always play with levels and colors in the post process, but why shall we waste our time for correction of hundreds of shots, when we can use a filter and thus save our time.
In digital photography, you will save your efforts and hours of your precious time, if you have an ultraviolet, polarizing, neutral, graduated color density filters. It will be definitely difficult to go without a group of fluorescent filters, which save lots of time in low-light photography.
Wikipedia: ‘UV filters are used for general photography to reduce haziness or fogginess created by ultraviolet light.
A UV filter is transparent to visible light, and so can be left on the lens for nearly all shots. As UV filters are usually inexpensive (about US$20, depending on size), many people use them as protection for their lenses, although this is subject to some controversy. For this purpose they are preferred over other kinds of filters which are more intrusive, such as neutral density filters.
The UV filter absorbs ultraviolet rays without changing the exposure. With most images, most people will not see a difference when a UV filter is used.’
Why shall we use a UV filter?
1. You should always remember that your lenses need to be constantly protected from dust, scratches, water and fingerprings and this protection can be provided by a UV filter. It doesn’t influence in any way on exposition, but it eliminates ultraviolet rays, which can be the reason for a bluish tone on a bright sunny day, especially in the mountains.
2. Modern filers, produced for digital cameras, in addition to ultraviolet prevent warm rays, which increases photography noise. For example Hot Mirror filters are featured only in most expensive cameras.
3. You should know that it is also important to use a high quality protecting filter, because it has a specific coating that is applied on a very thin, but strong optical glass. This coating helps you to get rid of hotspots, which is a serious problem for digital photographers, as digital cameras have a sensor, which reflects light even better than a film.
Modern multilayer anti-reflection coating allows light away from the optical system. That is why it is so important to have such a filter.
