Now You Can Compose Your Photos As a Professional
Composition in photography is built around the central subject of an image. It means that no matter what kind of photography you do – it can be a quiet studio photo session or an event-trigger shooting, you should understand the importance of each element of composition. And remember that the elements of composition are not equal.
Each composition has a central subject, and secondary elements which are important for creating the mood of a photograph. But there are such elements, which can distract the viewer’s attention from the main point of a photograph, that is why they should not be included in the shot.
If you want to build proper composition, primarily concentrate on the main subject of your image. Different photography genres presuppose different approaches to composition. Still remember that your prime task is always the same – it is to frame your image and to find its central element. Then, you are to photograph this central element, emphasize it and concentrate the viewer’s attention on it.
How can you achieve it? Here are some practical TECHNIQUES that will help you to single out the central element of your shot and accentuate it.
1. GET CLOSER. Enlarge the main subject of your image. In this case, the frame of a shot doesn’t cover large area, but the camera is close enough to the central element as on the photo below.
2. Place the main subject in the FOREGROUND of your shot. This technique differs from the one mentioned above in the way that the frame may include rather large area. It can be a wide shot with the central element depicted against a vast landscape or an interior.
3. Look for a TONAL CONTRAST between the background and the main subject. The difference in color of the background and the central element makes the latter stand out: white subject stands clearly against the dark background and vice verse.
4. Use a NARROW DOF. Focus your camera on the main subject and make the background and minor parts of the image blurred.
5. Direct LINES towards the centre. The lines will lead the viewer’s eye towards the centre of the image. In addition, you can accentuate the center with a light spot, where you can put your main subject, as on the picture below. Read Art composition: landscape photography.

6. Put your main subject in the CENTER or about it. Read The Secret of Centered Composition.
