What Photographer Ought to Know About Seasonal Variations
One of the most significant factor that influences on the way a landscape looks is a season. Spring, summer, autumn and winter – each of these seasons has its own peculiarities, which are better marked in the North Pole. That is why landscape photography is captivating during the whole year.
Seasonal Variations
Weather conditions and the quality of light are of utmost importance in landscape photography. The quality of light is determined by weather conditions and season. Solar elevation which is changing during the day and depends on the season, defines the quality of light and the time when you can shoot.
1. From this point of view, summer is not the best time for nature photographers. That is true that the day is long in summer and the weather is warm and sunny, but as the sun rises too high and the light is harsh, the middle of the day isn’t the best time for shooting landscapes.
2. While in winter solar angle rarely exceeds 20 degrees above the horizon, that is why despite a short day, lighting in winter is good during the whole day, and you can shoot from sunrise to sunset.
3. Early spring and late autumn are perfect times for shooting. You enjoy a good lighting and can photograph during the whole day. Visibility is better than in summer, as there is no haze. Changeable and nasty weather at this time also creates good conditions for shooting.
Spring
When the nature wakes up after a long winter sleep, a new life arises everywhere. Dull and grey landscapes become unrecognizable. Days grow longer. The sun rises early and set late, and it is the most intensive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
If you want to capture the brightness of spring flowers, you’d better shoot on a cloudy day and avoid bright sun, which creates a harsh light. This rule works for forest and abstract landscapes as well. In such conditions the light is soft and shades are not too sharp, thus contrast is not very high, which allows you to capture a wide range of colors and details.
The picture on the right is taken in Tuscany. In spring misty mornings are an often phenomenon. This image was taken about 6 a.m, when the sun rose and mist was left only in lowland areas. The equipment used: a panorama camera FUJI GX617, a 300 mm lens, a cable release, a tripod, 81B filter.
