Abstract Landscapes
The majority of photographers try to take images of perfect classic landscapes – photos of large areas under a pleasant lighting. However, we should not forget that there are different styles of landscape photography (read about various styles of landscape photography in Landscape Photography tips). In this post we will speak about abstract photography of landscapes more detailed (also read Landscapes in details).
What do you need?
Camera: any camera with changeable lenses.
Lenses: A telephoto lens or a tele zoom are ideal, but you can also use a wide zoom. Shoot at 20-200 mm focal length.
Settings: It is recommended using low ISO setting for abstract shots (50-100 ISO). For grainy effect, use ISO 400 and higher. You can also try shooting small details in black and white.
Filters: Use polarizing filters to make your abstract images more saturated.
Accessories: A tripod is highly recommended, especial at low lighting.
Take advantage of a KISS method
KISS is a well known among photographers abbreviation. It writes out as KEEP IT SIMPLE, STUPID. That is one of the principles that should be remembered when shooting landscapes. Too often we try to include in composition of an image more that it is necessary. As a result our images include too much information and too many details, what prevents the viewer from understandin, what is the main and what is the minor points.
So next time you shoot landscapes, try to find ways to make your photos simpler and you’ll be surprised how effective such a method can be.
A zoom tele or a telephoto lens allow you to be more selecting when composing a shot. Tele zoom lenses are ideal for abstract photography, because you can gradually change a focal length till you find an ideal focus point. It is very irritating when you compose a shot and find out that it’s impossible to exclude an unnecessary element only because a focal length of a lens is fixed. A zoom lens doesn’t have such a problem.
When you enjoy a beautiful view, try to find order in a chaotic general view. Pay attention at small details – lines of stone walls or hedges; bright patterns and colors of meadows and fields. Try to single out separate elements – a lonely tree in the middle of a meadow, sun reflection in the lake, etc.
