Do You Make These Mistakes in Nude Photography?
All human bodies have similar basic forms, but at the same time you would hardly find two absolutely the same figures. Often clothes and fashionable details hide the individuality of a separate person, create a monotony of human bodies and allow noticing only visible deviation from the standard.
In this post we’ll talk about nude photography and those rules that a nude photographer should know to be a success.
1. Primarily it is of utmost importance for any nude photographer to know and be able to recognize different figure types. One who wants to take skilful erotic photos should have some basic command of human anatomy, which will help him/her distinguish different figure types even if a model still has her clothes on.
If the photographer couldn’t see the difference of bodies, s/he would hardly avoid serious mistakes. You are not a professional nude photographer, if you don’t know which muscle should be tightened or relaxed to accentuate a certain detail or to lengthen, lift or lower a certain part of the body. You will also have to know how the form of different parts of the body can change in various poses, which muscles are better at creating shades and what kind of lighting is better to use for this purpose.
Only if a photographer knows all these things, s/he will be able to emphasize strong sides of the model’s figure and at the same time to soften or even hide some flaws of her body. Because there are poses that can make a certain figure look nicer in the photograph that in real life. And the task of a nude photographer is to find such poses for his/her model.
2. The model’s face and position of her head are of great importance in nude photography, because these things are able to create a certain mood of a picture. One of the most often mistakes is that the position of the head doesn’t not match that of the whole body.
Facial expression is the most important element in portrait photography, but it plays a significant role in nude photography as well. If the viewer can see the face of a model, s/he will unconsciously pay attention at its expression. Remember that if your model looks directly into the camera, there always will be a contact between the viewer and the model. If the face of the model is turned away and there is no eye contact, there can appear a distance between the viewer and the model.
3. Most rules used in portrait photography are applied in nude photography as well. The frontal view of a person is a widely-used pose in portrait photography. Your photo will seem more dynamic and the pose moving, if the head and the shoulders will be slightly turned towards each other.
4. If you purposely depict a model in profile, the final image will have an effect of ornament. The position of the neck and the shoulders also depend on the position of the head and hands. The classical line from the chin to the neck can be very impressive in a nude portrait of a beautiful woman. This line looks at its best when the model is photographed in profile. You can accentuate this line if the model lift up her head a little and you shoot from below.
Don’t use direct light in this case, or you may end up with ugly shades. Besides, you should remember about the folds on the neck which will inevitably appear if he model turns her head. Lighting can either emphasize them or hide.
5. Shoulders are an expressive detail in depiction of both female and male bodies. Wide and brawny man’s shoulders symbolize force, while well-built and soft woman’s shoulders are erotically appealing.
If the model is too thin, you should know that under the unfavorable lighting there may appear unattractive shades in the area of collarbones. This will accentuate the leanness of her body. That is why it is recommended using defused light as it helps to soften the shades.
