Portrait Tips
The main requirement to any kind of portrait is that it should resemble the model. But it should not only copy the model’s appearance, but also convey his/her personality. Today dynamic portraits are in fashion.
EquipmentCamera: For portrait photography different camera types can be used, still SLR cameras are preferable to compact ones: they allow taking images of higher-resolution. Such photos have a great deal more details that portraits taken by a compact camera.
Lens: You can use different lenses as well, but the best choice for portrait photography is lenses with a focal length equal to two lengths of the diagonal. Thus the best portrait lens for a 35 mm camera is the lens with 80 mm focal length.
Filter: It is desirable to use polarizing filters for black and white photography: light yellow for artificial lighting and middle yellow for natural lighting.Settings: Take portraits at the minimum shutter speed possible. This will allow to capture lively expressions of model’s face.Contrast interval varies greatly depending on the model’s appearance and the clothes s/he wears. An image of a blond dressed in white will be of the least contrast, while an image of a brunette in white clothing will be of maximum contrast. If a blond put on dark clothes, contrast will increase, if a brunette change for a dark dress, contrast of a photo will become lower. Contrast lighting also adds contrast to photos, while soft lighting has quite an opposite effect. Background: if you take a static portrait, you can use as background any piece of cloth. It is recommended avoiding bright pattern fabrics, as the pattern will distract attention from the face of a model.Place background so that it is not in focus. Best background colors are considered beige, buff, brown, gray, grayish blue. Some people want to be photographed on scarlet or red, navy blue or green background. Do not do that, because the color of the face looks unnatural on such photos. That can be explained by some psychological peculiarities of a people’s color perception.Besides, do not shoot portraits from too close for a high-resolution images. It will inevitably cause distortion of model’s appearance: nose, hands, legs will look much bigger. It is recommended shooting with a telephoto lens.
