Photoshop Levels
Your first step in the process of photo editing will be color correction of an image. That will allow you to get brighter and more saturated colors and higher contrast. Open a photo and then go Image – Adjustments – Levels (or just press CTRL+L) to open Levels Window in Photoshop.
Note! Remember that you have to work in RGB color mode. If you photograph is saved in CMYK mode, change it to RGB: go to Image – Mode and check RGB color. CMYK suggests far less color range than RGB mode, which prevents some filters in Photoshop from working in this mode.
Add Contrast
If your photo lacks contrast and saturation, improve it. In the Levels Window, move the pointers on the right and on the left of a diagram to the beginning of its peaks. Make sure that Preview is checked (in the bottom right-hand corner), then you will see the changes you do and control the result.
Change Brightness
If contrast and saturation correction is not enough, and the photo is still too dark or too light, move the pointer in the middle towards right and the picture becomes darker and vice versa. Click OK when you’ve done.
Intensify Colors
You can also use color correction to improve a separate area of you photo. For example if there is sea on your photo, Choose Channels – Blue in Levels Window and move the two pointers towards the end of a diagram. Then move the middle pointer.
Note! Do not overdo color correction, otherwise your photo will look unnatural.
Make Details in Shadow More Prominent.
Now let’s see how to make details in shadow more prominent. Working in Levels doesn’t help here, as it make colors either too light or too faded. Go to Image – Adjustments – Shadow/Highlight. Even if you will not change original settings, your photo will look much better. Technorati Tags: Photoshop, photoshop tutorials, digital photography, photography guide, photo news
