Children photography: photographic equipment
When we speak about photographic equipment, it should be mentioned from the very beginning that it is not a camera that makes a photograph good, but a person behind it.
Look at your own children photographs, they were taken with much worse equipment that it is available today, but they still are interesting and touching.
There is no technical problem that may prevent you from photographing your child. If you have a compact cam – use it, have an slr, or a digital camera – shoot with them. That is true that you will hardly be able to take a high-quality close-up photo of your child’s face with a compact camera, but you are sure to take a good portrait or a genre photo of your kid with any equipment. So, don’t lose your time and start learning your camera and its possibilities.
If you use a film camera, you have to decide what film to use first of all. Don’t deprive your children of bright recollections of their childhood, use a color film – black and white photography is the prerogative of professional photographers. Don’t go for a high-end professional film either; any of those that are sold in a store will suit you.
Besides, when you choose a film, the question of its sensitivity is inevitable. To find an answer to this question, you should consider lighting conditions and features of your camera. Remember that if you want to get prints of more that 10×15 cm, it is not recommended to use films with sensitivity higher than 400, as you will end up with noisy images.
.
If you plan to shoot with a digital camera, I would advise you trusting an Auto Mode, which in most cases is able to choose optimal ISO settings. For the advanced photographers who prefer to shoot in manual mode, there are no concrete recommendations. Do experiment to find an optimal ISO setting, because some digital cameras produce crisp images at ISO1600, while others end up with noisy photos at ISO200. Study your camera and shoot several shots at different ISO settings, so you can choose the best one later.
To sum up:
- It is not a camera, but a person behind it who makes good photos;
- A good photo is not only that which is perfect from the technical point of view, but which captures a unique moment;
- Choose a film of a moderated sensitivity;
- Choose an Auto mode in digital cameras, or experiment to find best settings.
