    Modern photography: Sally Mann

    April 3rd, 2007

SallyMann.jpgSally Mann (born on May 1, 1951 in Virginia) is a recognized American photographer. Her works are included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Corcoran Gallery of Art, among many others. She was named “Photographer of the Year” for 2001 by Time magazine.

She first achieved prominence with a one-woman exhibition in late 1977 at the Corcoran Galley of Art in Washington, D.C., showing surrealistic images she took of the construction of a new law building at Washington and Lee. Mann’s work has stimulated controversy beginning with her second published collection, At Twelve: Portraits of Young Women (1988). To critics, these portraits “captured the confusing emotions and developing sexual identities of girls at that transitional age, one foot in childhood and one foot in the adult world.”, but for many the photographs portray a child’s innocence.

Her next collection was Immediate Family in 1992. These images gained notoriety for including nude photographs of her own children. Some critics called her work ‘child pornography’. The condemnations of her work, still considered controversial by some, have not hurt her career. Her photographs continue to be shown in and collected by most major American art galleries and museums.

A recent collection of work, entitled What Remains (2005) features dream or nightmare-like images made with the antiquated glass plate process collodion, of rustic scenes in the pictorialist style, some including dead and decaying human bodies. Another series in the same body of work features images of the Antietam battlefield. The book closes with a series of images of Mann’s children. Many of the images appear to have been highly manipulated - scratched and otherwise maimed for artistic intent - however this is just a result of the imperfect collodion process. Mann has admitted to not wanting to perfect this process, as she feels the unintentional streaks and scratches add something to her photographs.

Mann’s most recent works have been landscapes or “land portraits” of rural areas of Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Virginia. Most of it is untitled, and can be found in a collection called Deep South. These images were photographed using damaged lenses and cameras, creating a ghostlike effect and producing images full of light leaks.

    Photo announcement: warmtone inkjet

    April 3rd, 2007

1.jpgHARMAN PHOTO ANNOUNCES WARMTONE INKJET LAUNCH

*HARMAN announces springtime launch for second HARMAN PHOTO inkjet paper

HARMAN technology has officially announced launch plans for the second product in its pioneering HARMAN PHOTO professional inkjet media range – the HARMAN PHOTO FB Mp WARMTONE paper. Details of the new warmtone product were first unveiled at this year’s Focus on Imaging exhibition, held at Birmingham’s NEC.

Howard Hopwood, marketing director at HARMAN technology commented:
“Whilst researching and promoting the launch of the first HARMAN PHOTO paper at various photography events, it became clear there was a huge demand for a high-quality warmtone paper. Interest was particularly high amongst black and white enthusiasts familiar with our ILFORD PHOTO traditional monochrome photography products.”

Warmtone products are generally manufactured for a black and white market, enhancing the tonal qualities of an image, and the HARMAN PHOTO’s use of real photo baryta will further augment these qualities.

    Howard Hopwood explained:
“HARMAN PHOTO products incorporate real photo baryta, which on the Matt FB Mp product offers enhanced colour brightness, archival properties and tonal range. However, through our heritage in monochrome photography, we understand the facets baryta can bring to black and white images, and the warmtone product really brings these benefits to the fore.”

“However,” he continued, “The HARMAN PHOTO FB Mp WARMTONE paper will still be suitable for colour images, and we have noticed in our testing that it is particularly effective in enriching skin tones on colour portrait images.”

The HARMAN PHOTO professional inkjet papers are manufactured through an entirely unique process, using some of the same technology and equipment used to produce ILFORD PHOTO silver monochrome products. Exclusive anti-curl technology has been developed at HARMAN’s plant in Mobberley, Cheshire, which ensures the paper lies completely flat before, during and after printing – helping to recreate the look and feel of traditional photographic prints.

The HARMAN PHOTO FB Mp WARMTONE paper is due for launch in May this year, with further products in the range to follow over the course of 2007 and beyond.

    Howard Hopwood added:
“At HARMAN technology, our sole aim is to produce products that help photographers create the best possible images. As such, we are committed to the development of new and innovative imaging products that not only adapt to new technologies and trends, but genuinely drive both digital and traditional photography forward. The new Warmtone inkjet paper is testament to this approach.”

CAPTION -        Into the warm: HARMAN technology is following up the successful launch of its HARMAN PHOTO Matt FB Mp paper with a Warmtone version this Spring.

    NOTES TO EDITORS –
HARMAN technology Limited is a pioneering professional imaging specialist based in Mobberley, Cheshire. The company is renowned for manufacturing ILFORD PHOTO traditional monochrome photographic products, and announced the launch of its pioneering HARMAN PHOTO inkjet media range, suitable for both colour and monochrome photography, in August 2006. The first HARMAN PHOTO products became available in the UK and USA in February 2007.

The ILFORD range of photographic inkjet products, including ‘ILFORD Galerie’ inkjet media, is not manufactured or marketed by HARMAN technology, and remains a separate business based in Switzerland.
