Little Known Ways to Create Perspective
One of the techniques which may help the photographer make an image more interesting and accentuate its most important elements is creating a perspective.
Each photographer should remember that silhouettes, forms, colors of the same subjects will look differently on a photo if they are photographed from different focus points. It is caused by Perspective.
Perspective, in the context of vision and visual perception, is the way in which objects appear to the eye based on their spatial attributes, or their dimensions and the position of the eye relative to the objects. The examples of visual perspective are the following:
- Objects, which become more distant, begin to appear smaller;
- parallel lines tend to meet at a distant point;
- a person standing at the corner of a building at ground level sees each of the walls recede to an imaginary point on the horizon.
Color and tone differences on photos are also determined by the distance between the object and the photographer. This phenomenon is called tonal perspective. The examples are the following:
- objects does not look very sharp at a distance, besides they lose their brightness;
- deep shadows become softer at a distance;
- highlights and reflections become less noticeable;
- background seems brighter than foreground.
Thus, Perspective helps us to determine the distance between subjects.
How can we create a perspective:
- Use lenses with short focal length and place some objects at the foreground.
- Include diagonal lines in a shot.
- Choose an aperture that will separate the foreground objects from the background ones.
- Create shadows using side and/ or back lighting.
- Divide a frame into three parts and fill in these parts with an object.
- Use lighting which will create deep shadows.
How can we make perspective look less noticeable.
- Use lenses with greater focal length and avoid placing objects in the foreground.
- Include vertical and horizontal lines.
- Use even lighting.
- Avoid including in a frame subjects which are situated at a distance from each other.
- Use defused lighting (cloudy days create great lighting).
