Build a Composition You Can Be Proud Of
Photograph is an art technique which can be used by any person connected with art. Photography composition can be compared with a process of writing an essay for public reading.
One of the most common mistakes an aspiring photographer does is a hectic disorganized gaining of knowledge and experience. The result of such practice is frequent faults and professional negligence.
Here are some tips you should consider to build a composition you will be proud of.
1. First you should remember that it is of utmost importance to be able to clearly state your task. In most cases it is more difficult to state a goal rather than to find ways to achieve it. Before you start, answer these questions.
* What are you going to shoot? Do you want to show an object or an action on your photo?
* Where are you going to shoot? What are the setting, background, place?
* When? In the morning or in the evening, in winter or in summer, etc.
* How? Do you want it in color or in black and white, crispy or blurred? Do you want to add special effects or apply special techniques.
* Equipment? Which camera are you going to use, which additional equipment do you have? Do you have a sketch?
- Remember to write down camera settings used for each worthy shot. The more detailed description you will do, the easier it will be to analyze a photograph. In case you are a very lazy person, write down exposure settings at least, it will help you a lot in future.
- Do not hope to learn all about photography in one day, one month and even a year. One needs much more time to learn it. Auto mode will never help you, if you shoot without thinking.
- The viewer perceives a photo from two different points: associative and emotional. The former affects the viewer’s imagination and calls for some associations, it also arouses images connected with these associations. The latter influence on our emotions, causing a definite reaction to an image. As a conclusion, I’d say that if a photograph is good, the viewer examines it carefully, if a photograph is a bit worse, the viewer examines it to understand how it is done, and if it is bad, the viewer thinks s/he knows nothing about photography.
To conclude, I’d like to say that composition (from Latin – combining, linking, connecting) can be symmetrical and asymmetrical, static and dynamic. It often contains lines, certain shapes and texture that can lead the viewer’s eye to a subject and thus imposes on him/her particular associative images and arouses certain emotions.
