Holiday Pictures: tips for beginners
What is the major requirement to a New Year photographer? That is easy, he should not leave his camera for a moment. Candid shots are often best reminiscences of the funniest moments.
1.But among holiday photos there are usually more posed images. Let’s start our discussion from group photos. My first recommendation will be to group people together and take care that there is nothing superfluous at the background and that at the same time everyone is within a frame. It is always better to take group portraits at the beginning of a party, while it is possible to make people get together and pose.
2. The major problem of photographing inside is lighting. In auto mode, a camera is likely to use a flash, which creates harsh lighting and causes dark shadows on the walls. Soft lighting will suit much better a situation. There are several ways of creating desirable lighting.
If your camera allows to change flash direction, it is recommended to turn a flash to the ceiling.
- But most point-and-shoot cameras do not have such a function. In this case you may defuse light from a flash by covering it with a tissue.
- Or you can switch on all available lighting in the room (it will soften shadows) and put your models as far away from the wall as possible.
- There is one more solution. You can increase an ISO setting, but be careful, as a high ISO may cause too much noise on your photos.
3. Pay your special attention to White Balance. Most modern cameras have a preset or even several preset white balance modes for shooting inside. Even better if a camera allows to set white balance manually with the help of any white or grey object or a special card, so called neutral reference. Read more about it here.
4. It is not recommended shooting with a long shutter speed, as an accident movement of one of the guests will inevitably spoil a shot.
5. If you don’t want to leave anyone out of frame, use a wide angle zoom lens. But if your aim is a portrait of one or two guests, for example you want to capture a pair of dancers, you’d rather use a telephoto lens. It is a good idea to use a shallow DOF to attract attention to the subject and blur the background. Portraits look better if you shoot them with a short shutter speed and a flash.
