Macros: how to take interesting photos
An image which is right from a technical point of view does not always evoke publics interest. If you want your image to impress the viewers – it should not be just a photo, but an artwork. All photographic techniques and rules of photographic composition you apply in any other photography type work for macro images as well. Learn composition rules, lighting techniques, perspective – there is a great number of articles, books and video about it.
If speaking about an object, it is recommended looking for interesting angles. A good macro shot means more than just coming to an insect close enough, focusing on it and pressing a shutter button. What for do you need an image, if people show no interest in it? If you want to make it appealing to public, you’d better spend more time at the object. Besides, it is not as difficult as it may seem – as I’ve already mentioned, if an insect allows you to reach it, it is likely to allow you to do whatever you want afterwards.
When you find an interesting object, do your best to photograph it. Come to it slowly and at a distance short enough to be able to take a photo, capture a few shots and go on moving forward shooting at the same time. When you are very close, shoot again and try to make yourself comfortable. When you manage to sit or lie down quietly – find the best angle and set lighting.
If you don’t make sharp movements and don’t lose your time, there are usually no problems. When you’ve photographed an object from different angles, it is time for the last manipulation. Keeping a camera in one hand (you may put it on your shoulder for stability), turn a branch with the other hand till an insect is in its best position. Take more shots varying its pose and lighting. That’s it… If the shot is well-focused, if the lighting is suitable – some of these images must be good.
Another way to get an interesting shot is to find a plot. It is even more complicated – life stories of bugs last for seconds only. You must be lucky and determined to find an interesting plot; and experienced - to manage to capture this moment without compromising on quality. But the results are well worth your efforts. Such shots are sure to attract viewers attention. Technorati Tags: macro photography, macro lens, digital cameras, additional equipment, macro images
