Free stock images: where to get?
You need free stock photos? In this post I will make short reviews of top free stock photo websites. It is not an ultimate list – if thoroughly searched you will find thousands of middle-sized and small photo sites that host free stock images. I jut tried to make a reference list of the biggest free image storages of this sort:
1. Flickr.com yes, this is a great place to search for free stock photos. You are not allowed to make use of any images you find on Flickr. You should check images under a Creative Commons license:
Attribution means:
You let others copy, distribute, display, and perform your copyrighted work - and derivative works based upon it - but only if they give you credit.Noncommercial means:
You let others copy, distribute, display, and perform your work - and derivative works based upon it - but for noncommercial purposes only.No Derivative Works means:
You let others copy, distribute, display, and perform only verbatim copies of your work, not derivative works based upon it.Share Alike means:
You allow others to distribute derivative works only under a license identical to the license that governs your work.
2. Freefoto.com FreeFoto.com is made up of 93243 images with 138 sections organized into 2912 categories. FreeFoto.com is the largest collection of free photographs for private non-commercial use on the Internet. You will have to pay if you need images for your commercial projects: prices start from just $30US for Internet use.
3. Imageafter.com they say: Image*After is a large online free photo collection (about 14,000). You can download and use any image or texture from our site and use it in your own work, either personal or commercial.
4. Yotophoto.com a search engine for free-to-use stock photographs and images. These are images that are either in the Public Domain or released under generous Creative Commons, GNU FDL or similar licenses. Probably, your search for free stock images will start and finish here. They index various sources of free imagery on the web including Flickr, Wikipedia, Stock.Xchng, Morguefile, Pixelperfect Digital and OpenPhoto.
5. Free-stockphotos.com the project owner comes from Australia. Download free photos for your personal/commercial design projects.
6. sxc.hu the site evolved into this massive community you see now - there are about 500.000 registered users and more than 180.000 photos online! Share your photos with fellow designers! SXC is a friendly community of photography addicts who generously offer their works to the public free of charge.
7. Openphoto.net The Open Photo Project is a moderated photo community with the goal of uniting image consumers and producers through friendly Creative Commons (http://creativecommons.org) licensing.
8. Morguefile.com a place to keep post production materials for use of reference, an inactive job file. This morgue file contains free high resolution digital stock photography for either corporate or public use.
Unfortunately, even this impressive list is not likely to resolve all issues that you will have in the process of image search. Extra options that you have:
- make your own images
- pay for stock photos
