Hello! As I have promised today we continue our tour around Canon PowerShots A. And now we will dwell in particular on new Canon PowerShot A530 and A540 and their comparison with Canon elder models, PowerShot A510 and A520, that respectively will be replaced by their above successors.
But first let us arrange all the parameters of the newly created models in tables, that further will be subject to evaluation.

Advantages of new Canon PowerShots A530 and A540 over old A510 and A520:
- ISO (Auto, 80/100/200/400/800 vs. Auto, 50/100/200/400)
New ISO 800 setting reduces image blur (the effects of camera shake) and sharpens objects in low-light conditions by shooting with high shutter speeds.
- DIGIC II Image Processor and iSAPS Technology
DIGIC II Image Processor is made to improve image quality and processing speed. Thus it provides remarkably faster startup, autofocus and playback, aside from assuring every image with more color and real-life effect.
iSAPS Technology is Canon’s original scene-recognition technology developed to improve focus speed and accuracy, as well as exposure and white balance.
- Number of megapixels (3.2 for the A510 and 4.0 for the A520)
- Shooting speed (1.9 p/s in A520)
- 16:9 widescreen resolution option for full-screen viewing on widescreen TVs or computer monitors
Advantages of Canon PowerShot A540 and A530:
- LCD size (2.5in vs. 1.8in)
- more shooting modes (20 vs. 17)
My view? These cameras preserve all easy to use features that have made Canon PowerShot A series extremely popular among amateur photographers. Moreover, they are masterfully enhanced with a new powerful processor and new ISO settings, what will render photos even more realistic.

February 23rd, 2006
Hi! Have you heard the latest pleasant news from Canon? No? Then listen.
On February 21 they have announced a release of 10 new lens-integrated digital cameras, that is planned for the next two months. The new cameras are provided with new additions at all levels of the current range. They belong to Canon PowerShot S, Canon PowerShot A (A700, A540, A530, A430) and Canon Ixus (Ixus 800IS, Ixus 65, Ixus 60) series.
Though a long-zoom range 6-megapixel PowerShot S3 IS (RRP $799) is considered by some critics to be of the greatest interest, today we’ll dwell on Canon’s A series PowerShots, and to be more exact, on the A430.
Why? Simply because I want to lead you through all these novelties in this and in my future posts. And the new Canon PowerShot A430 is at the entry level. So, just like at any educational institution we’ll start from the very beginning.
Well, as I’ve already mentioned… (I hope, you won’t mind if I repeat myself just a bitJ) … Canon’s A series PowerShots are supplemented by 4 models, the majority of which will replace current models.
Speaking about the fully-automatic A430, I should say it is the replacement for Canon PowerShot A410. But let’s compare them to see how the new model is better. To have a better understanding and ‘digestion’ of the changes I suggest arranging all the info in 2 tables: the first will include common features of the two models, and the second – their differences. So you’ll see for yourselves what are the advantages of this new Canon’s creation.
But, upsJ) I’ll post them tomorrow in order not to cram you with lots of info at once… For now, I’ll provide you only with my resume. Illogical? But, still take it…
So, my conclusion. What are the advantages of the A430 over the A410?
- 4-megapixel CCD
- ISO speeds supported range from 64 to 400
- 4x optical zoom lens (39-156mm equivalent) added by 3.6x digital zoom (combined zoom capability: 14x)
- 1.8-inch LCD
- additional shooting modes (11 pre-set scene modes plus eight color modes)
- super macro setting with focus down to 0.4in/1 cm
- video recording in VGA Movie Mode (640 x 480) at 10 fps or QVGA Movie Mode (320 x 240) at 30 fps with sound
- 16:9 Widescreen resolution option allows you to capture images and movies that are ideal for viewing on widescreen TVs and computer monitors
- lens focuses to 47 cm in standard mode and 5-47 cm in macro mode
And finally, for those interested to buy the camera. The new Canon Power Shot A430 will be available in March 2006 at about $179.99.
