Richard Avedon (1923 - 2004)
Richard Avedon was born in New York on May 15, 1923. His ancestors emigrated from Russia at the end of the 19th century. Avedon left the university and from 1942 to 1944 served in the US marine forces, where he was in addition a photographer assistant.
Right after serving Avedon went to work by the Russian-born designer, Alex Brodovich, who was at those time Harper`s Bazar art-director. The 40s were indicated as establishing of fashion-photography with its new style and form. So Richmond was in the stream as well.
In the 50s Avedon worked for a short period of time in “Theatre Art” magazine; and in 1959 he published his photography album “Observations”.
When Richard Avedon was only 33 years old, his fashion-photography career was screened. The movie was titled “Fanny Face”.
The 60s and 70s brought him fame as he was recognized as one of “10 top photographers of the world” by “Popular Photography” magazine. Besides, this period was fruitful for models – various rock musicians, artists, actors and many others posed for him.

In the 70s Richard Avedon published a number of books with his photos and exhibited his works in best American museums. That time he also started his famous photo-project “In the American West”. He took pictures of nearly 752 American average people and that came into history!

The last years, starting from 1992, Richard Avedon worked as a full-time photographer in “The New Yorker” magazine. He died on November 1, 2004.
