Photoshop History Brush. An Easy Way To Sharpen Photo Details
In the internet we may find a lot of articles about different methods
of sharpness increasing or work with sharp filters in Photoshop. All of
these tools seem to be quite interesting to practice with, but they are
all intended to sharpen the whole image. One of them we
described in our previous article. But sometimes we may find it
difficult to apply sharpness on the entire picture, because noise may
appear at certain areas or the image may look oversharpened.
We are going to talk about easy and effective way of detailed sharpness increase that can make us concentrate on the part of the picture, where it is really needed
- for example, stressing on eyes or hands, or selecting a certain element of clothes. You will be able to edit the area of the picture that is required at the moment. It is a powerful and effective tool of photographer's work.
The method of detailed sharpness increase is based on the History Brush
instrument, which is a multifunctional Photoshop tool. In fact, it may
be compared with a time machine: in the History box we have all of the
actions recorded during processing, allowing us to return to any step
of the editing. It is quite a useful possibility by itself, but we can
still enrich its functions.
 History Brush is a special
brush, which can help us "drawing" elements into our image from any
previous step of editing. For that we only need to tick off the
required step of editing in History, and that's it - we can start
painting!
So, now we have a History Brush and the task of sharpness increase on several parts of the shot. 1. Open a picture and try to increase sharpness on the model's eyes. For that apply Smart Sharpen on the whole picture. Its Amount depends on the file size and resolution.
2. Get back to History, returning one step back. As you can see, the step with
sharpness increasing has remained in History, so you can start working
with it. Tick that step with the increased sharpness and then get back on one step.
3. Take the History Brush and set the required Opacity value in the History Brush settings. By
changing the Opacity you identify, how much information shall be taken
from the History step. In our case, 35% of History Brush shall use only
one third of sharpness. If you make three strokes of brush, you will
apply 100% sharpness. It is more convenient to work with the values of
30-50%, since you can partially add your editing details on the image.
4. "Paint sharpness" with the brush. The main areas to paint on a portrait are the eyes, the lips, hair and eyebrows, hands and all other lines you want to be sharpened more or less (as well as jewelry and clothes)
As you see, it is
quite an easy and amazingly effective tool. Now you can increase
sharpness on the picture only at those areas, where it is really needed.
