    Photographer Interview: starstef601

starstef601, the winner of several contests, is answering our questions.

    1. Who are you? Please give brief background information.

My name's Stef and I live on Long Island, NY. I live on the north shore, so I enjoy taking sunset pictures in particular. I have three sisters and a pet cockatiel name Rocky. I love animals and love photographing animals and nature.

    2. How long have you been doing photography?
I started to become interested in photography around two years ago and I got my Nikon D40 for Christmas last year. Before that, I just used a regular digital camera.

    3. Do you earn living from photography or you do photography as your hobby/ your half time job?
Photography is only a hobby for me. I just love capturing beautiful things and being creative.

    4. What’s your day job?
I'm a student in High School in tenth grade.

    5. Do you have special education? Did you take courses or go to a school learn photography?
Everything I learned is from my dad who used to have an interest in photography, and simply experience. I'm planning on taking a digital photography course in school next year.

    6. Are you specializing in a particular area of photography? What are your favorite places/objects to shoot?
I take pictures of anything I find interesting of beautiful, but i particularly enjoy photographing nature and animals.

    7. Who are your big photographic influences?
My dad would probably be my biggest influence because he inspires me in so many ways and is always supportive of everything I do. I am not educated about real famous photographers yet, so my dad would have to be my answer, not that it's not a good one. =]

    8. How do you educate yourself? Do you read special literature, visit photography galleries? What photo books/magazines do you have on your bookshelf?

I learn mostly from experimenting with things, though I do own a few photography books that I occasionally read. I also read some information on the internet, and view other people's photographs to pick up on things.

    9. What equipment and software do you use (camera(s), lenses, film, etc.)?
My camera is a Nikon D40, and I have a standard lens (not sure of the exact mm right now), a more zoomed in lens, a macro lens attachment, and a wide angle. I also have two tripods.

    10. What is your opinion on post-processing, especially enhancing pictures?
Some pictures are best left alone because it is amazing to see the natural beauty of things without editing it. Enhancing colors sometimes annoys me because I want to see how things naturally look. Other editing I love just playing around with, experimenting with different tools. If I know if a picture is edited or not then I can appreciate it from there.

    11. What advice would you give someone who is interested in photography and wants to improve their photography skills?
I'm not the most experienced person, but I have learned that capturing subjects from different angles is one of the best techniques to use to be more creative. Some things look incredible one way and not so great another way, so always try new things and experiment.

    12. What’s the most challenging aspect of photography for you? What’s the best part of it?
The most challenging is probably finding ways to make subjects more interesting or finding the right angle to shoot at. The best part is shooting something breath taking then looking back on it a few weeks or months later and realizing how great that picture is and appreciating it so much more.
