Photographer Interview: kjfishman
kjfishman, the winner of several contests, is answering our questions.
 1. Who are you? Please give brief background information.
Kent Pillatsch - Married 36 years, 2 children, 2
grandchildren, I am a Vietnam era Air Force veteran, worked in
computers and telecommunications for 30 years mostly with Rockwell
International.
2. How long have you been doing photography?
Started getting serious about photography
shooting my children in the early 80's With my trusty Pentax K1000,
Pentax Super Program, black and white film and my own dark room. Shot
mostly bulk T-MAX and for color Kodachrome or Fuji Chrome slide film.
3. Do you earn living from photography or you do photography as your hobby/ your half time job?
Hobby but wouldn't mind making a few bucks from it.
4. What’s your day job?
Retired for about a year now and enjoying it.
5. Do you have special education? Did you take courses or go to a school learn photography?
I read a few books, no formal education.
6. Are you specializing in a particular area of photography? What are your favorite places/objects to shoot?
What ever catches my eye but travel photography is my favorite.
7. Who are your big photographic influences?
Ansel Adams, National Geographic
8. How do you educate yourself? Do you read special literature,
visit photography galleries? What photo books/magazines do you have on
your bookshelf? I read books and study images others have captured. Looking at
photo books like the Day in the Life series offers a lot of insight.
9. What equipment and software do you use (camera(s), lenses, film, etc.)?
I have learned to keep it simple and use a
Pentax Ist D digital and a 18 to 55 AF lens most of the time..
Sometimes I use my 60 -300 non AF and 50 MM F1.2 non AF that I used
with my old Pentax Super Program.
 10. What is your opinion on post-processing, especially enhancing pictures?
Cropping and minor adjustments are fine as long as you are not over
compensating for poor technique. Special effects that you can achieve
with the computer are fun. Special effects are a different art form.
11. What advice would you give someone who is interested in photography and wants to improve their photography skills?
Learn the basics like apertures, F stops, ISO, depth of field and how these elements effect the image.
12. What’s the most challenging aspect of photography for you? What’s the best part of it?
I find flash photography challenging.
