Photographer Interview: Stephanievegliante
Stephanievegliante, the winner of several contests, is answering our questions.
1. Who are you? Please give brief background information.
 - My name is Stephanie Vegliante. I am currently a college
photography student with a freelance business during the time that I am
home.
2. How long have you been doing photography?
- i have been doing photography at a substantial level for about 4 years.
3. Do you earn living from photography or you do photography as your hobby/ your half time job?
- After graduating from school I hope to earn a living doing
photography. For the time being I do it as a side job in the summers
and during my school break's.
4. What’s your day job?
- I am a student and a dancer.
5. Do you have special education? Did you take courses or go to a school learn photography?
- I am in my second year of college. This past year as been the
first year where I have had hands on photography classes where I am
learning proper use of lighting, skills, and techniques. Up until last
year I self-taught.
6. Are you specializing in a particular area of photography? What are your favorite places/objects to shoot?
- My favorite subjects to photograph are children. I am for the
most part a portrait/headshot photographer. I try to add a little edge
to my work and make it my own, with my own style. I hope to have a
career as a freelance photographer when I am out of school. And hope to
work in advertising and hopefully for a magazine at some point.
7. Who are your big photographic influences?
- I take a little from everyone I see.
8. How do you educate yourself? Do you read special literature,
visit photography galleries? What photo books/magazines do you have on
your bookshelf?
- I have some books from school and others I have acquired that I
use to educate myself, but for the most part I figure out techniques on
my own by fooling around with different techniques.
9. What equipment and software do you use (camera(s), lenses, film, etc.)?
- I shoot with a Nikon D50 (which will hopefully be upgraded to a
NikonD200 shortly), I have an 800 speedlight I occasionally use, and a
softbox for indoor portraits. However, I prefer natural outdoor
lighting. I use my basic 18-55mm lens and my 55-200mm. I also have a
Nikon FM10 35mm camera I use for fun and for B&W photography
classes.

10. What is your opinion on post-processing, especially enhancing pictures?
- I feel that it is every photographers duty to make their
photographs look the best that they can, and take artistic merit.
However, I feel that when an image is "over-edited" it takes away a lot
of the charm and skill that the photographer used when taking the
photograph.
11. What advice would you give someone who is interested in photography and wants to improve their photography skills?
- Look at other peoples work and pull from what you see to find
your own style. If you see something you like take pieces of it and
make it your own. Try new things and don't be afraid to make mistakes.
Many mistakes end up being the best photographs you will ever take.
12. What’s the most challenging aspect of photography for you? What’s the best part of it?
- The most challenging aspect is when I see an image through my
view finder and when the image is blown up I have lost the image that I
original saw. It is often hard to craft a photograph exactly how you
would like it to look at with all of the aspects you picture it having
in your mind.
