Photographer Interview: PunkRose
PunkRose, a contest winner, is answering our questions.
1. Who are you? Please give brief background information.
My name is Lia Caverly and I'm a high school sophmore. I go to an
American school in England. My parents work for the government.
2. How long have you been doing photography?
I've been interested in photography for a number of years. I truly enjoy it. I'm never without my camera.
3. Do you earn living from photography or you do photography as your hobby/ your half time job?
Photography for me is a hobby, I love taking pictures, I love
looking at pictures, and well, let's just say it, I love the "ooh's and
ahh's" I get when my family and friends look at my photography. But
then again, their family and friends, they kind of have to do that
stuff
4. What’s your day job?
I'm a sophmore in high school.
5. Do you have special education? Did you take courses or go to a school learn photography?
My freshman year I took a class called interactive multimedia that
focused on photoshop, illustrator and inDesign. Photography was also a
large aspect of the class. And just recently, I was accepted to
Creative Connections, a symposium for the fine arts, in Germany. I
spent a week there learning about photography and photoshop.
 6. Are you specializing in a particular area of photography? What are your favorite places/objects to shoot?
I really like to shoot people and emotions.
7. Who are your big photographic influences?
I guess you could say that black and white photography is what
influences me the most. The majority of my photographs are black and
white. There something about the sharp contrast between the two colors
that gets me every time.
8. How do you educate yourself? Do you read special literature,
visit photography galleries? What photo books/magazines do you have on
your bookshelf?
I pick up any magazine that has helpful tips, but I'm not
currently subscribed to any magazine in particular. I also have
"Digital Photography for Dummies" which is extremely helpful, in all
aspects of digital photography.
9. What equipment and software do you use (camera(s), lenses, film, etc.)?
I have a Canon Powershot S3IS, with two macro lenses. Nothing really fancy.

10. What is your opinion on post-processing, especially enhancing pictures?
If your going for a natural look, then photo enhancing can only
get you farther away from what you want. However, enhancing a photo
for, let's say, a special occasion, that you want remembered forever,
like a wedding, and your drunken cousin vomited all over her dress,
than post-processing can only help you. It really depends on the
situation, and what end-product your looking for.
11. What advice would you give someone who is interested in photography and wants to improve their photography skills?
Learn as much as you can, and shoot, shoot, shoot. The more
pictures you take, the more comfortable you become with your camera and
taking pictures. If you don't have the eye naturally, like some lucky
people do, develop it yourself.
12. What’s the most challenging aspect of photography for you? What’s the best part of it?
The most challenging aspect... hmmm... probably getting people to
be real. Real emotion is what I love to photograph the most, and it's
amazing at what people will do when a camera is on them. The best part?
Getting that shot at all. The minute you see that real emotion, after
90 pictures, and looking at that one and saying "that's it" is the most
rewarding of all.
