Photographer Interview: Himself
Himself, a contest winner, is answering our questions.
1. Who are you? Please give brief background information.
I'm Himself...past that, I'd prefer not to say anything, other than I'm a Christian.
2. How long have you been doing photography?
I've been taking pictures since August 2008.
3. Do you earn a living from photography or you do photography as your hobby/ your half time job?
For me, photography is purely a hobby.
4. What’s your day job?
I'm a school student (surprise!).

5. Do you have special education? Did you take courses or go to a school learn photography?
I actually spent the first semester of this school year taking
photography as an elective. Each week was a different assignment -
sometimes I would have to take pictures showcasing shadows, or
different types of lighting, and other times I would have to take a
variety of pictures. Because of that, I've learned to use a lot of
different techniques that I would have never thought of otherwise.
6. Are you specializing in a particular area of photography? What are your favorite places/objects to shoot?
There's no single area of photography that I specialize in - I
shoot lots of things. I like taking pictures of landscapes and anything
that I can turn into a macro.
7. Who are your big photographic influences?
Probably my uncle (who is also a photographer), and any number of
people who take pictures that wind up in scenic calenders (those
calenders were my original inspiration to get into photography).
8. How do you educate yourself? Do you read special literature,
visit photography galleries? What photo books/magazines do you have on
your bookshelf?
Right now, I'm not actively trying to learn anything about photography, but in the past I've used resources like Digital Photography for Dummies, as well as a few websites. I don't read any special literature or have any magazine subscriptions, etc.

9. What equipment and software do you use (camera(s), lenses, film, etc.)?
I have a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5 and a tripod. I also have a Canon
Powershot S1 IS at my disposal, but I hardly ever use it. As far as
software goes, all of my editing is done on Microsoft Photo Gallery.
10. What is your opinion on post-processing, especially enhancing pictures?
If it makes it look better, why not?
11. What advice would you give someone who is interested in photography and wants to improve their photography skills?
Approach things from different angles - for example, a picture of a
house shot from a little bit to the side is probably going to be more
interesting than a picture of a house taken from dead on.
12. What’s the most challenging aspect of photography for you? What’s the best part of it?
The most challenging part of photography for me is trying to work
around my environment so the camera can see what I see. The best (and
oftentimes most surprising) part of photography is getting to see the
end result of the pictures I take.
