Photographer Interview: Chris L
Chris L, the winner of several contests, is answering our questions.
1. Who are you? Please give brief background information. I’m a husband father of four kids with one
more on the way. I grew up outside a small town in Manitoba and
currently live in Winnipeg. I love spending my time outdoors and my
hobbies include hunting, fishing hiking and photography.
2. How long have you been doing photography? I’ve been taking photos for a while but only began photography as a hobby in January 2008.
3. Do you earn living from photography or you do photography as your hobby/ your half time job? Photography is strictly a hobby.
4. What’s your day job? Power Engineer
5. Do you have special education? Did you take courses or go to a school learn photography? No formal photography training for me, I’m more of a trial and
error kind of guy…with a great deal of errors and a few successes along
the way.
 6. Are you specializing in a particular area of photography? What are your favorite places/objects to shoot?
I can’t say that I specialize in any style of photography, but
I do prefer nature photography with as little human element as
possible. I love the zoo because of its proximity and the ability to
get in close to animals that are difficult to photograph in the wild.
7. Who are your big photographic influences? A co-worker and brother-in-law mostly.
8. How do you educate yourself? Do you read special literature,
visit photography galleries? What photo books/magazines do you have on
your bookshelf? I’ve read many good magazines and in particular PhotoPlus which
I would recommend to any beginner Canon DSLR user. I also love websites
such as shotaddict and flickr that encourage me to get out and take
photos and provide me with a host of great photos to draw inspiration
from.
9. What equipment and software do you use (camera(s), lenses, film, etc.)?
For equipment I use a Canon Rebel XTI, a Canon 28-135mm IS,
Canon 50mm and 18-55mm as well as a Canon 580EX II flash. For software
I mainly use adobe lightroom.
10. What is your opinion on post-processing, especially enhancing pictures? I don’t have a problem with using software to improve photos
but I try to get the photograph as close to what I’m looking for when
taking the photo so as to save time later.
11. What advice would you give someone who is interested in photography and wants to improve their photography skills? Read, don’t stop looking for more information and try to
notice images and photographs on the TV, in magazines (not exclusively
photography), and advertising to help with creativity and most
importantly…take lots of photos, digital cameras make taking photos
cheap so click away.
12. What’s the most challenging aspect of photography for you? What’s the best part of it? Getting the timing, lighting and framing right. Getting it all right and seeing the results.
