Nonstandard Method of Photographing, or the Spy Hole Project

There are several ways of photography reality distortion for the purpose of interesting images making. Thereto you can use the fish-eye lens or the Photoshop “lens correction” filter. Besides, there is one more variant – a simple spy-hole. :)

If we examine the economic part of the problem, then we will see that the cheapest alternative is … a spy hole! :)

So, let’s use it as a lens.

It will be great if you have an old simple hand-held digital camera with external fixed optical cover

Here you can see our experimental version of a spy-hole 1.0:

It consists of 4 plastic parts connected by means of sticky tape. In contrast to the fish-eye, an object that is situated at the centre is little distorted (especially, if it stands at the distance more than a meter). It helps to get unusual enough reality reflection.

The second version of the spy-hole 1.1 has a lens isolated from light except for light coming through the spy-hole. In this model depth resolution has been increased.

So, what pros and contras does the spy-hole 1.1 have?

Negative moments:

1. Plastic is very fragile

2. Flares because of reflection optics

3. Misalignment of the spy-hole is possible

Positive moments:

1. Immediate artistic ideas realization

2. Comparative absence of the camera movement while shooting manually at night.

3. Possibility to make portraits without serious face distortions, but with fancy distortion of environment.

4. Price!

Thus, we can proudly say that our experiment has been successful and has given us a series of spy-hole photos.
