Learning Soft Focus Effect (Photoshop Picture Tips)
Today we'll show you the effect of Soft Focus. It can change your photo enough, adding some tenderness and calmness to it. Also it can improve the light drawing in your portrait.
Tips and Hints:
- For best results it should be close-up portrait with rather low-contrast lighting. But if you try it anywhere you want you can achieve unpredictable results!
- Before performing the following steps make sure that you are glad with colors (the most common problem is red face). You can cope with it going to Image -> Adjustments -> Selective Color -> Reds
and move the Black slider to the left, reducing the luminance of red
color. You can also reduce or increase any color you want in this
dialogue box.
- Also do the basic retouching, removing different skin defects, with the help of Spot Healing Brush Tool (J) or Clone Stamp Tool (S).
Let's start! 1. Open your photo and duplicate it (Ctrl+J).
2. Convert the upper layer to the black and white format, going to Image -> Adjustments -> Desaturate (Shift+Ctrl+U).
3. Perform Image -> Adjustments -> Posterize and set the level 7. The eyes should be rather detailed.
4. Change the Blend Mode from Normal to Overlay.
5. Blur your photo. Go to Filter -> Blur -> Gaussian Blur and, following the changes (tick Preview), increase the radius. The example photo needs radius 5,2 pixels.
But you need to blur your photo until you won't be able to see the
harsh texture of posterization, where lights are turning to shadows on
the face.
Your photo is ready! You are welcome to ask your questions or share your results on our photo forum!
