    How To Isolate The Object With The Extract Filter (Photoshop Tutorial)

    In this article we will talk about the internal Extract Filter in Photoshop, which may be used to separate the object from the background.

            Tips:
    • This plugin can be applied most effectively on the image, where the difference between the background and the object is seen well.
    • The best way is to work with the enlarged image at its maximum (Zoom Tool (Z) or Ctrl+"+").

    1. Open the image that you wish this plugin to be applied on.

    2. Perform Filter -> Extract... (or Alt + Ctrl + X).

    3.
    You can apply the settings by default if the object is highly contrasting with the background. If it doesn't differ much, then you need to pay attention to the following steps.

    4. The Brush Tool size should be sufficient enough to cover the edges. If they are very detailed (hair, for example), set the Brush to 20 or more. The fatter the brush is, the more touch-up you'll have to do, although the fatter brush makes for easy (and sloppy) selections. First, start with a large brush to outline a general selection, and then switch to a smaller brush for the touch-up work. To resize the Brush Tool use "[" and "]".

    5. Set the Highlight color to any you want to get a good contrast with the background. Ticking Smart Highlight will allow you to work with the well-defined edges fast.

    6. Outline the image (capturing some area round the image) that you want to separate.

    7. Select the Fill Tool (G) and fill in the area inside the selected object.

    8. Open Preview to see the results or apply your changes, pressing O.K.
    9. Also, in the Preview mode you can use the Cleanup Tool (C) or Edge Touchup Tool (T) if some parts of the background are left or some of the object has been lost. It will erase unwanted bits and restore (C+Alt) the area you need.

    10. After you've isolated the object from the background, you may save it as a new image and blend it with other images.
