5 Simple Ways To Make Sepia Color In Photos
The gray sky and dull weather almost ruined the nice view? Increase
contrast and try Sepia! Though it's rather common effect to improve the
photo, but sometimes it's the only one. In this article we offer you 5 different methods and it's up to you to decide which is yours.
1. Hue/Saturation
2. Variations
3. Fill Layer
4. Photo Filter
5. Color Balance
All these methods can be performed after converting your image into black and white format. We recommend to use an adjustment layer Black & White because you will be able to change its parameters at any time.
 1. Hue/Saturation
a. Duplicate your b&w layer (Ctrl+J).
b. Go to Image -> Adjustments -> Hue/Saturation (Ctrl+U) or at the Layers Panel. c. Make sure you're working in Colorize mode. d. Move the sliders to Hue 29, Saturation 32 or close to them.
e. Change Opacity of the layer if needed.
Hint: This way is rather quick but for best results you need to go over the settings by the hit-and-miss method.
2. Variations
a. Duplicate your b&w layer (Ctrl+J). b. Go to Image -> Adjustments -> Variations... c. The default range is Midtones, don't change it. d. You may see different tonal variations: click on More Red and More Yellow. e. Try also Lighter or Darker versions. f. If you are going to print your photo tick Show Clipping, it will show whether there are some color areas that can't be represented with CMYK color model. g. Apply changes (OK). If you think that your Sepia Effect is too bright you may reduce it with Opacity changing.
Hint: This way is very convenient and quick due to its visualization.
3. Fill Layer
a. Duplicate your b&w layer (Ctrl+J).
b. Create a new layer filled with sepia color. Go to Layer -> New Fill Layer -> Solid Color. Or use the Layer Palette. Sepia has the next parameters R:112, G:66, B:20.
c. Set Color as the blend mode.
d. Adjust the Opacity as you wish.
4. Photo filter
a. Duplicate your b&w layer (Ctrl+J).
b. Go to Image -> Adjustments -> Photo Filter.
c. Choose Filter Sepia or more dark Color R:112, G:66, B:20. d. Tick Preserve luminosity and increase Dencity to ~85%.
5. Color Balance
a. Duplicate your b&w layer (Ctrl+J).
b. Go to Image -> Adjustments -> Color balance. c. To imitate Sepia effect move the upper slider to Reds and the bottom slider to Yellows to the same distance.
Hint: The result depends on your choice. There is no universal formula.
