Terrible picture quality
Do any of the other bells and whistles matter if the picture quality is awful?

2010-03-16
Was kind of worried
Researching cameras to get an easy portable camera to take on vacations, trips, etc., I saw the ad for this camera, the Nikon Coolpix S70. In reading the reviews, I have to say I was kind of scared to buy it but figured I would use it and check it out right after buying it and if it had "horrible" or "blurry" pictures, I still had time to take it back and exchange for a different one before the trip I'm going on. I have to say, after reading several of the reviews, I was absolutely surprised. From right out of the box, the pictures I took were absolutely stunning and looked even better when uploaded to the computer. I did notice, though, when I had it on the "auto" setting with macro on, some of those pictures didn't turn out so well; but that was expected.

So, all-in-all, I'm very, very pleased with this camera. Of course, it will never be the same as my digital SLR camera, but who can expect that with a small, point-and-shoot camera. I am very happy!

Great features, terrible picture
The camera was a quick purchase as a gift without my usual research. After weeks of using it, and having other digital camera users try it, I had to return it for the poor picture quality. I have never had to return a camera, but we could not get the pictures to be sharp and clear. All others features were great, but the output was just not what it should be, at any price. It will be a great camera when that is corrected.

Stay away!
Well, reading the reviews should be enough to confuse anyone about the camera. Many people share the same story, that it has been difficult or impossible to get good pictures from this camera. Others declare that they are well pleased with the quality of the photos. One thing for sure, the experiences with the camera are not universal. It's important to note that none of these are professional cameras. They are meant to be a simple to use camera, that produces a good picture. If I hired a professional photograher and he showed up with a compact, I'd fire him on the spot. That said, this is my second CoolPix. The first one, an S60, was purchased in July 09, and works like a champ. It was replacing an ancient Sony Cybershot 3.2 MP that has always worked well. The S60 produces very clear pictures that you can zoom in on or enlarge and still looks clear. It has a variety of easy to use advanced options that allow a more knowledgeable photographer flexibility and creativity. In November I purchased the S70 for use at work. The S70 shares these features, but not the picture quality. Originally, when we discovered how poor the pictures looked, we thought there must have been some setting that needed changed. I guessed that perhaps it was in a minimal dpi setting for email sized photos. Not so. No amount of experimenting could improve it. On the highest resolution setting, photos come out grainy and blurry. No amount of Photoshopping makes the pictures good. I have joked that they put the decimal in the wrong place, that it should be 1.2 Megapixel. Honestly, the 3.2 MP camera on my phone takes much better pictures.

It's hard to say why there is such disparity in the reviews. Some certainly is user opinion or experience level. I think it is likely that the cameras are inconsistent from the factory. Perhaps some are manufactured at different facilities or different product runs had different internal components. Bottom line, if you see a good deal on one, be prepared to test it out personally and potentially need to return it.

Great Camara
I did a lot of online research before selecting the Nikon S70 as a christmas present for my wife. I have a 35mm Nikon and love it. After seeing a nikon ad I looked into it. My wife could not be happier with the choice I made. The software makes downloading and storing pictures a snap. Overall I give this little gem 5 Stars.

Nikon Cameras History

Nikon Corporation is one of the major companies of the Mitsubishi Group, a multinational corporation headquartered in Tokyo, Japan and specializing in optics and imaging.

Nippon Kogaku K.K., or Japanese Optical Society (afterwards became known as Nikon Corporation) was formed at July 25, 1917 as a result of merging of three firms: Tokyo Keiki Seisaku-sho's optical division, Iwaki Glass Seisaku-sho ?? Fujii Lens Seizo-sho. The new company was aimed at manufacturing high-quality optics for Imperial Japanese Navy. And up to 1945 it actually was their main goal that determined the company’s philosophy and traditions. The first president of Nippon Kogaku was Yoshihira Wada.

Apart from military equipment the company produced microscopes, telescopes and other measuring instruments for industry and science. From 1932 they started serial production of Nikkor lenses for photo cameras. It’s an interesting fact that all Canon cameras, launched between 1937 and 1947 were equipped with lenses produced by Nikon!

After the WW II Nippon Kogaku K.K. manufactured its own camera –a rangefinder Nikon 1 – and stopped manufacturing lenses for Canon. The new camera appeared already Nikon-branded.
