Amazon always jacked up the price on thanksgiving sale!
i had been a customer for amazon for quite a long time now. but i noticed that amazon would always jack up the price before the thanksgiving sale holiday. can anyone tell me why? last year, i was watching the sb900 flash which price was $350 right before the thanksgiving day, it went up to $460. last two weeks i saw the nikon d300s price at $1499 and when i was about to buy it today the price went up to $1699. i'm really surprised that other third party seller is staying out their reasonable price. amazon why? you got me twice on this one amazon. for this i'm losing business with you. not good amazon!

Awesome camera with the ruggedness and speed you need!
I love this camera! It's a backup camera I bought to complement my D700 and for the 1.6 lens factor for my tele lens. Surprisingly, it's been the camera I reach for when I go out to shoot!
I find it operates just as fast and focuses just as quick as my D700 and the Hi 1 aspect of ISO sensitivity is just awesome! Please see the photo inserts under mikechang.photo!
I did not have a chance to thoroughly try out the video functions but from the initial use it's as good if not better than my HD camcorder from Panasonic.
During one of the trip I accidentally dropped the camera from the camera bag which caused the battery cover to pop off and battery (and my heart) went flying out! I was able to popped the cover right back and reinsert the battery without any difficulty. The camera not a scratch! I checked all camera functions and it's files from shootings after all seems to work just fine! What a relief! From all the shooting that I did with both cameras the files looks and enlarges equally well. The resolutions of both sensors were very difficult to differentiate except under extreme enlargements ( perhaps 30x40) where the D700 gives you that added extra crispness and saturation. Otherwise, both camera functions almost the same. Same positions for most of the functions and same size display 3'' screen. It's however, slightly lighter and smaller but feels very solid. For the duration that i have this camera I am very satisfied! And, I really enjoy having this camera (along with my D700!)

Nikon D300s
I already have a D300 which I have been using for a couple of years. This camera is an incremental improvement. Yes, it does movies just fine.

The controls are about 95% the same as the D300; just a few improvements. I've owned lots of cameras, this is without a doubt the best!

Big Improvement Over D200
This camera is a big improvement over the D200 which is what I switched from. The picture quality is amazing and you can crop really far into a picture before it becomes pixelated. The only thing I can complain about is that the video isn't too great because you cant focus and shoot video at the same time.

Great work-horse of a camera.
I've been shooting with this camera since it's US launch and have been nothing but impressed. For the price-point, fantastic layout of buttons, strong frame build, user-definable buttons and preferences - this will make a fine high-end amature/advanced student/semi-pro camera.

Burst speed is fast (even faster with a batter-grip and 2nd battery), auto-focus is quick and accurate, shutter-release is highly responsive, layout is intuitive and great for making changes to every major function on the fly, 2 programmable buttons situated at your right-hand fingertips, DUAL MEMORY CARD slots (CF and SDHC), bracketing up to 9 frames (hello HDR), Live View (for those body contortionist shots), and almost limitless menu options make me very confident and pleased with my purchase.

As for Nikon adding video capabilities to this model, and the rash of reviews complaining about its 720p quality and overall lackluster video performance... I'm pretty sure no one is hinged on purchasing this camera BECAUSE of the video features. In my time with this very capable DSLR, I've touched the video feature maybe twice - and both times just to show-off to a colleague.

I have only 3 minor complaints:
-Weight of the unit makes it tiresome to handle all day. The handful or weddings and other events I've shot with it have left me exhausted. However - you know its built like a tank, and can take a good deal of abuse and function perfectly.

-Size of the unit makes it look stupid with an SB600 flash on top - get the new (massively great) SB900 to photog in style. ;)

-No bump up in MP? Makes sense since it isn't a major redesign of the model, just a "value added" model.

Final thoughts -
The D300s is the D300 with video and some slightly (very slightly) improved features. If you can do without the (rarely used) video features - the D300 will net you virtually the same performance.

Because of the D300s' launch, watch for the original D300 prices to slide and grab yourself a steal on a very capable camera with an even friendlier-to-the-paycheck price tag sans video.

Let me know if this helped!

Nikon Cameras History

Nikon Corporation is one of the major companies of the Mitsubishi Group, a multinational corporation headquartered in Tokyo, Japan and specializing in optics and imaging.

Nippon Kogaku K.K., or Japanese Optical Society (afterwards became known as Nikon Corporation) was formed at July 25, 1917 as a result of merging of three firms: Tokyo Keiki Seisaku-sho's optical division, Iwaki Glass Seisaku-sho и Fujii Lens Seizo-sho. The new company was aimed at manufacturing high-quality optics for Imperial Japanese Navy. And up to 1945 it actually was their main goal that determined the company’s philosophy and traditions. The first president of Nippon Kogaku was Yoshihira Wada.

Apart from military equipment the company produced microscopes, telescopes and other measuring instruments for industry and science. From 1932 they started serial production of Nikkor lenses for photo cameras. It’s an interesting fact that all Canon cameras, launched between 1937 and 1947 were equipped with lenses produced by Nikon!

After the WW II Nippon Kogaku K.K. manufactured its own camera –a rangefinder Nikon 1 – and stopped manufacturing lenses for Canon. The new camera appeared already Nikon-branded.
