Customers Reviews 2009-11-06 I just love it! I have always wanted a digital camera but it seems so difficult to take pitures with this new digital camera. There are just too many features and seems like so much to set before taking a photograph. Consequently, I have been toying with the idea until September of this year, I decided to place an order for SD780IS and to my amazement the camera is so good-looking. The photograph is not so difficult to take and above all the picture came out so nicely. I am happy with it and so please that I have made the right decision. The price is right too! | 2009-11-03 Good low-light performance plus HD video clips This is a camera you can fit in your pocket. It takes good low-light pictures if you are careful, and its image quality is excellent in better light conditions. The battery life is good. | 2009-11-03 Try this....Beautiful! This camera is really wonderful....when i first saw it i doubted it's ability but it turned out to be awesome....try it and i guarantee that you will also like it......... | 2009-11-03 Super little camera.
I was a bit leery of buying this camera because some reviews raised issues with picture quality, edge softening, lens flare, pinkish cast to tungsten settings and graininess.
I am happy to report that picture quality on my new camera is equal to that of my last 2 SDs, an SD1000 and an SD800.
There is absolutely no lens flare at 100X magnification.
AT iso 400, pictures taken indoors with tungsten setting with or without flash have no pinkish cast and are acceptable for prints up to 5X7 or so.
Picture edges are acceptably sharp.
Here are 2 really, really nice features; 1. The review button is separate, turns the camera on for review of pictures, and the pics can be cycled through rapidly.
2. The slider allows auto and a custom setting. I use Auto outdoors, and set the "C" setting for indoors using tungsten, iso 400 and flash off. Then when coming indoors just move the slider to the C position. It's instantly set for most indoor shots with tungsten and good ambient light. If the light is low, just turn the flash to auto.
The camera itself is tiny and pocketable.
Cons: the optical viewfinder is really tiny. It's hard to carefully frame a picture using it in low light. Buttons are also quite small, but arranged in the usual Cannon configuration. I found myself using a fingernail to quickly change settings.
So far pictures have been really stellar; makes me think some reviewers got sub-par cameras to test. | 2009-11-02 SD780IS--best compact camera for the money. As an experienced and picky photographer, I'll try to be fair, objective, and to the point.
The bottom line is this is a great compact digital camera for the price. It takes great photos when set up right--auto-mode produces less-than-desired results (typical for "auto" set ups") as they tend to be overexposed and lacking in color. Perfectly normal for auto. Use "P" mode and tune as desired. The lens isn't that wide--I believe it's a 28mm on 35mm equivalent, but it's certainly wide enough for most uses. The lens is sharp but does have distortion at its widest end. Avoid taking photos of really defined horizons such as the ocean/sky.
One issue I have with this camera is the durability. After light-to-moderate use, the paint is either thinning, or rubbing and chipping off. I only had it a few months and it already looks beat and battered, especially when next to my friend's 3-year old panasonic point and shoot which he uses a lot more than I use my camera and it looks almost new. Another friend has this exact same camera for about the same time ( a few months ) and it too is chipping, peeling, etc.

Canon Cameras HistoryCanon Corporation is a world-known manufacturer of office equipment ranging from printers and fax machines to scanners and copying machines.
The amount of photographic equipment produced by Canon is rather moderate in comparison to their other products. But it is in demand around the world. Don’t forget that it is the photographic cameras that the company began its business with.
As early as in 1933 Goro Yoshida and his brother-in-law, Sabura, founded the Precision Optical Instruments Laboratory in Tokyo. Their goal was to create a Japanese camera and make it known throughout the world. To begin with, the young people bought up and examined most advanced German models of that day. The enterprise was sponsored by Takeshi Mitarai, best friend of Uchida, a prosperous doctor, who later became president of the company.

In the following year, 1934, Japan's first domestically-made 35mm focal-plane shutter camera “was born” and was named "Kwanon" - after the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy. The trademark Canon was registered a year later.
The first consumer model Hansa Canon appeared in 1937 and the le... More About Canon Cameras |
