Customers Reviews 2009-11-07 Great camera for action & adventure, not so much for daily life. If you get into the water at the beach, snorkel, ski, snowboard, participate in other cold weather activities, or if you just tend to drop things, this is a good camera and does what it was intended, and does it well. However, if you're looking for a camera that slips into your pocket, takes great party photos, family snap shots, or other less than arduous activities, reconsider buying this camera.
This camera takes good photos in moderate to extreme conditions; after all, it is a Canon. It will not take wide-angle photos and its standard telephoto is limited to 3x. Since the lens is tucked inside a durable housing, that limits what the lens can do. The settings are somewhat limited, but that is anticipated in a point-and-shoot camera. Raw images would have been nice and a little more manual control is always nice. However, it is a point-and-shoot for a reason. Anyway, who wants to be running out of oxygen underwater while trying to find the perfect manual setting.
I really like the way I can attach the lanyard to each of the four corners, the strong flash, and general build quality.
What it does poorly is fit into your pocket. For a small camera, it is bulky. The best description I can think of is take a great Canon PowerShot and stuff it into an underwater housing. That extra bulk is needed so the camera can perform in the moderate to extreme conditions.
If you're looking for a small camera for everyday use that takes great photos during our usual mundane lives, look hard at other small cameras that provide equal or better functionality and takes equal or better photos for the same or lower price. | 2009-11-06 Very Pleased I bought this camera because I live in Palau where there is beautiful snorkeling. I wanted a camera that did well on land as well as underwater, and I didn't want to deal with an underwater housing. I looked at a lot of other cameras before deciding that this one seemed worth the price. I have not been disappointed.
Some reviewers complained that it was a little slow and that it didn't shoot in RAW. It's important to remember that this is a point and shoot. If you are wanting the quality of an SLR for underwater, be prepared to spend a LOT more money for an SLR housing. For a point and shoot, this is an excellent camera, both underwater and on land. My husband and I both have Canon SLRs and were very impressed with the clarity of our underwater shots with this camera.
It is a little bulkier than I was wanting, but it also feels very sturdy. I really feel that I can take it anywhere without worrying about it. It has fallen off a table, and passed the shock proof test. There is no lens cover, but the lens is protected and does not scratch.
The battery life is nothing to brag about. I would recommend a spare battery, as well as a float strap if you plan to have it anywhere near deep water.
Overall, I have been pleased with this camera and would recommend it to anyone looking for good land and water shots. | 2009-11-04 Fantastic waterproof camera for vacation and shoots good photos out of water, too! I got this camera just a few days before our trip to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, so I didn't have much time to test it out before we left. It took good pictures around town while in Sydney plus it was easy to carry and portable. I used it constantly for the 3 1/2 weeks of our trip and love the camera so far.
I originally looked into getting a waterproof housing for my Canon Powershot, but couldn't find one exactly right and they were very expensive. We were just going to do some snorkeling, not diving, so didn't need something for deep underwater. I liked the D10 because it was rated for 10 meters instead of 3 so you could feel safe swimming down to things well below the surface without worry if you are too deep.
Once we got to the reef, just jumped in and started taking pictures. The screen was bright and easy to see under the water. I was careful to turn it off between shots if I wasn't constantly snapping away, so we never had any problems with the battery life. (I saw this on a few reviews before my purchase, so I was careful.) It has such a quick start time that I never felt that I was going to miss something. I also turned off the picture review to save the battery. This also allowed me to take my next photo much quicker since you didn't have to wait for the review before the camera went back to "live". The pictures were fantastic, I uploaded a few to the customer picture gallery. I couldn't have been happier with the photos and beats those disposable cameras, hands down!
Once you get out of the ocean, very important to soak or thoroughly rinse the camera to remove the salt. Our boat had a fresh water bin to soak/rinse the cameras as you got out of the ocean. Also be sure to let completely dry (and may want to use a puff blower over the battery cover as water likes to stay in some small spots there) before you open the battery cover or usb cover. I also took the extra precaution to blow off (with the puff blower like you use for your digital SLR) the edges of the seals of each compartment before closing them to ensure no dust or sand might be hiding there. No sense in taking a risk like that.
Changing between the scene modes was very easy, but usually not necessary. When shooting sunset or evening photos, the camera would automatically change to sunset mode for you and enrich those great colors. I also used the aquarium mode, which was a nice option since it changed the light balance and ensured no flash to ruin your photos. Mostly I left it on Auto and let the camera do all of the work. You don't need to think about anything, just shoot away and let it take great photos for you.
I accidentally tested the shockproof feature of the camera one day. I hadn't put the strap on my wrist and was carrying some other things in my hand. I dropped the camera from about shoulder height to the cement with no damage and only a small scratch!
One small drawback is the small optical zoom. I understand it, especially since the lens can't extend but it would have been nice at times to have a more closeup shot. With 12MP, I feel I can crop the photos a bit when necessary without too much worry since I mostly post them to the web. There is still plenty of resolution left. (My Nikon D70 SLR is only 6MP.)
Overall, I'm very impressed with this camera. It was very easy to use, feels sturdy (and survived a 4 foot drop), and takes great photos both underwater and otherwise (especially love many of the sunset photos).
| 2009-11-04 EXCELLENT VACATION CAMERA I purchased this camera based on all the excellent reviews, I"ve read on Cnet and Amazon........I think this is a wonderful camera for my upcoming cruise vacation..............as my Nikon D300.........will not work for snorkeling........and going to the beach...........while this very atractive pint sized performer.........will fill the bill........I find you have to make sure that the battery hatch cover is closed tightly and properly........it kind of makes a woosh noise........when closed properly......I have taken some test fotos..........and I must say that once you set the menu up...........such as setting you pictures on the vivid mode for a little extra color pop........its.very ,very nice..and lets not forget that this camera is a 12.1 megapixel........with the Canon Advanced Digic processor.........Anyway I will report back when I return from my cruise vacation..and post some of the pictures I will take....so far I think this is a teriffic performer.and I highly reccomend it | 2009-11-03 very good photo quality- but not waterproof After one day being under the water- the next day the camera shuts off after a little while and says to change battery pack! The battery was full and it constantly did that after one day! The photo quality is unbelievable and it's really not as bulky as a powershot g7. But for the price of the camera- I expect it to last past one day. | |

Canon Cameras HistoryCanon Corporation is a world-known manufacturer of office equipment ranging from printers and fax machines to scanners and copying machines.
The amount of photographic equipment produced by Canon is rather moderate in comparison to their other products. But it is in demand around the world. Don’t forget that it is the photographic cameras that the company began its business with.
As early as in 1933 Goro Yoshida and his brother-in-law, Sabura, founded the Precision Optical Instruments Laboratory in Tokyo. Their goal was to create a Japanese camera and make it known throughout the world. To begin with, the young people bought up and examined most advanced German models of that day. The enterprise was sponsored by Takeshi Mitarai, best friend of Uchida, a prosperous doctor, who later became president of the company.

In the following year, 1934, Japan's first domestically-made 35mm focal-plane shutter camera “was born” and was named "Kwanon" - after the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy. The trademark Canon was registered a year later.
The first consumer model Hansa Canon appeared in 1937 and the le... More About Canon Cameras |
