Customers Reviews 2009-11-09 W290 beats W220 - own both, uses same accessories Got a Sony Cybershot W220 camera and wife loved it. Also got extended warranty from Vann's SquareDeal. After reading manual I had to have the deluxe Cybershot so I bought the W290 for me with more advanced features and easier to use menu plus better zoom than W220. I liked the W290 so much more than the W220 I told my wife I would sell it for a loss or I was going to give the W220 to a family member and buy another W290! She said she liked it so we keep both :-) I liked the W220 until I got the W290 with easier menu and more features such as underwater, (we hope to go back to the Philippines and "Swim with the Fishes") and other open shutter ability on a tripod to take low light photos similliar to SLR capabilities. The LCD is bigger but what is also handy is all the accessories work on both. However for the deep water case to work on various Cybershots different inserts have to be changed. Other than that, and I doubt most folks need the 134 foot water proof case - it is GREAT for the $$$!!! | 2009-10-22 Great camera! This is my second Cyber-shot. The last one was damaged beyond repair on a fishing trip. The new one is even better, particularly in being more "user friendly" and offering more customization for special photos. The other nice and unexpected thing I learned is that even though my old camera was about 3 years old, I can use the same battery and charger. Now, I have a back-up battery that I salvaged from the damaged unit. The other nice feature is the little sounds that confirm various selections when making adjustments to the many options within the menu. I had the new unit about one month and probably taken 100 pics and am totally satisfied. | 2009-10-20 this camera is great so I had two previous Sony cameras... I've always had really good experiences with the brand. yeah, some will say you can get a better bang for your buck, but really you won't go wrong with this camera. it takes great pictures, the settings are really easy to use, and the video is great quality. i'm really happy with this purchase! | 2009-10-16 For the price, outstanding This is my second digital camera. The first was a Canon Rebel SLR. Since it is a SLR, it can take some amazing shots, but the much cheaper Sony W290 produces better shots in low light. Certainly, the Sony has great portability - put it in your pocket, vs. the SLR bulk. Anyway, for the price point, this camera has very good, fast shutter response (low shutter lag) which is great for pictures of the dog. The picture mode options are very easy to understand and the automatic mode does a great job. Understandability vs. the expensive Canon is tremendous.
One problem: I edited several pictures (crop, zoom, etc.) on the camera and saved them. I viewed them several times, then suddenly, they would not diplay on the camera and a file error code came up. This turned out to be ok since the edited pictures could still be downloaded to a computer and they were fine, as edited/saved. Sony's help/ support site offered no help except to suggest not editing on the camera - THAT'S A COP OUT SONY!!! I would expect more from them. Also, the cable with multiple connections is clunky. Why not use a more standardized connection like the several cables I have that connect my phones or MP3 players to the computer?
Overall, I am very satisfied with the performance of this camera for a couple hundred bucks. | 2009-10-09 DSC-W290 I am not fully satisfied with the picture quality. But considering its low price, it's acceptable. | |

Sony Cameras HistorySONY Corporation is a multinational corporation with headquarters in Minato, Tokyo, Japan. It is one of the leading manufacturers of electronics, video, communications, video game consoles and information technology products. The very name “Sony” is derived from sonus, the Latin word for sound.
The history of SONY Corporation dates back to the spring of 1946 when an entrepreneur Akio Morita and a promising young engineer Masaru Ibuka opened a modest radio engineering workshop in Tokyo. At that times markets were not abound in technological products; that’s why they were free to develop any direction in electronics. So, as soon as in 1951 Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation have launched Japan's first tape recorder called the Type-G.
The invention of transistor opened new horizons in the world of electronics. In 1957 Telecommunications Engineering Corporation came out with a transistor radio. Though being not the first to do this, it was SONY to make radios commercially successful for the first time. Their serial production was already under the brand SONY, so both the product and the brand won worldwide recognition.
By the 70-s SONY Corporation have become the world’s biggest audio and video equipment manufacturer. In I964 they produced first desk calculator. In 1968 ... More About Sony Cameras |
