The High ISO tests against the 5D2 & D700
I bought a D3x this week and the first thing I wanted to do was compare it to the two other bodies in our household: my wife's Canon 5D Mark II and the Nikon D700. I have written a full article on my website and linked full-sized image galleries from there also that people can download and review on their own computers.

[...] For a camera of this resolution and detail, the performance at higher ISO is spectacular. I previously used a Hasselblad H2 with a Phase One P45+ and with that I don't think I ever shot it above ISO 100 and it is a very very slow camera back. The D3x is the pinnacle of the DSLR hierarchy right now, a fabulous tool... Highly recommended.

Nikon D3x another winner in a long line of quality
I've had Nikon Cameras for quite some time and this is not a novice camera. The spec's tell the story. I had mine up in Alaska on a Pop foto Trip and it worked wonderfuly. I did loose a pixel, turned into a red hot spot, 1 in 24mega pixels. Inconvient yes but easy to work around. Nikon repaied and returned quite quickly. The heart of the Nikon System is I can use a lens built 50 plus years ago, Other camera makers change there mount as time march's on. Most of the Nikon System is backward compatable so with the change from film to digital the len's didn't need to be upgraded at a saving of Big Dollars.

The Best Yet
I purchased and reviewed the Nikon D3 earlier and decided to keep it when I purchased the D3X. The reason I kept the D3 is that I shoot sports, low light, outdoors etc. The capability of shooting with such high ISO settings, high frame rate is what persuaded me to not trade it in. I did not realize just how much more detail the D3X would result in. I also had been almost convinced that higher megapixels is a waste over kill etc. It most certainly isn't unless you are dealing with small prints, snapshots, presenting just on internet along this line, then it would be a waste. If however you are like me, a want to be professional, larger the image the better, with extreme clarity, detail, conatrast, in a word stunning, then you must try to test out the D3X. I question my decision to keep the D3 but found at recent Zoo outing that both cameras came in handy. I had the Nikon 200mm F/2 lens on the D3X to shoot at greater distance and for the close intight shots, and had the 24mm to 70mm Nikon zoom on the D3. I was able to take about 150 shots on each camera, and found a few I liked because of the composition of my shots, not because of either camera, both are amazing. I found when you view a picture at 100% size from the D3X, I shoot in RAW in both cameras, the results are simply amazing. I could literally see seperate eye lashes of a camel, and elephant, even the lion shots some at a good distance convinced me that if I make it as a photographer it will be in large part of Nikon D3X, D3 and lenses. I love the build of both the D3 amd D3X, sturdy, heavy to some, solid to me. I lugged both cameras around with the above mentioned lenses, along with 2 extra lenses for 7 hours at the Denver Zoo. I spent maybe an hour all day with periodic rest stops. I would do it again and I'll be 60 in a few months. I love the controls and layout of both cameras which if you like one you'll like the other they are identical as far as I can tell, I have not closely examend each menu item. I am glad I kept both cameras now because of the changing lens issue, for me it is worth it and love the shots I took with both, but the D3X resolution would make it the choice if I had to choose between it and the D3. I know Nikon will come up with bigger and better in a few years they always do, but for now hard to imagine, how to better the D3X.

Received defective camera- very disappointed with Nikon service
After deliberating for months about whether to invest in this camera, I ended up receiving a defective model. The main issues involved electronics (both the playback button and the vertical shooting shutter-release would jam up). Hopefully there are not other glitches I am unable to perceive (I have neither the equipment nor knowledge to carry out extensive testing). Also, and this makes me crazy, the viewfinder was dirty out of the box. Spots and a general black haze are especially prominent in the upper left-hand. I think this is unacceptable in any new DSLR (I had a similar though less extreme experience with my D300), and I think it goes without saying that it was particularly outrageous to me after spending $7300. This kind of dirt is not something that can be cleaned, I am told, and it is a production issue. Apparently this is true since it came back in the same condition after sending it off to Nikon Service & Repair.

Now getting to my Nikon service experience. It cost me $121.70 to send it in insured with UPS Ground (the cheapest shipping option). I had to wait 10 days to get it back and didn't schedule any jobs during this time (I am a freelance portrait photographer). I called Nikon to ask about being reimbursed for the expense of shipping it and was denied. They said I should have returned it to Amazon if I received a new item that was defective, and it is their warranty policy to have customers pay for sending in repair items. Huh... problem is you have to use the camera to find out if it is defective, and then it it not "new, unopened, and unused" which is Amazon's policy. Wow, I can't believe Nikon didn't try to do anything to make amends for this. For a company that is trying to brand itself as having superior customer service, they really fell flat. I also never received an explanation about the dirty viewfinder. When I asked the service representative about it, he ignored the issue. Really unhappy with my whole experience, and doubly so after feeling like I purchased their most expensive DSLR and was treated as though I am unreasonable for feeling that I shouldn't bear the shipping expense for repairs on a defective new product. I think all of the inconvenience, time lost, jobs pushed back, and frustration was enough for me to carry? And here I am writing this review, spending even more time on the issue, because I feel others need to be wary of Nikon's slipping quality. It's all very sad.

Nikon service gets a 0 for customer relations. However, I will say the camera does seem to be working fine since the repair (but I can't quite get rid of that nagging feeling that it may still be defective in some way I can't detect).

Not for Amateurs
I shot my first job with the Nikon D3x..this is definitely a pro camera and for pro's going from 12 megapixels to 24.5..it will blow you away. I am completely spoiled now. I shot a commercial assignment on location at Biltmore and the detail is amazing and just has a lovely quality. Be warned though..it was a shaky start. I was working in Photoshop CS3 and had to upgrade to CS4 with a plug in for the Nikon D3x. So if your raw files don't open..this is why. After that..smooth sailing.

Nikon Cameras History

Nikon Corporation is one of the major companies of the Mitsubishi Group, a multinational corporation headquartered in Tokyo, Japan and specializing in optics and imaging.

Nippon Kogaku K.K., or Japanese Optical Society (afterwards became known as Nikon Corporation) was formed at July 25, 1917 as a result of merging of three firms: Tokyo Keiki Seisaku-sho's optical division, Iwaki Glass Seisaku-sho ?? Fujii Lens Seizo-sho. The new company was aimed at manufacturing high-quality optics for Imperial Japanese Navy. And up to 1945 it actually was their main goal that determined the company’s philosophy and traditions. The first president of Nippon Kogaku was Yoshihira Wada.

Apart from military equipment the company produced microscopes, telescopes and other measuring instruments for industry and science. From 1932 they started serial production of Nikkor lenses for photo cameras. It’s an interesting fact that all Canon cameras, launched between 1937 and 1947 were equipped with lenses produced by Nikon!

After the WW II Nippon Kogaku K.K. manufactured its own camera –a rangefinder Nikon 1 – and stopped manufacturing lenses for Canon. The new camera appeared already Nikon-branded.
