I like it
This is my first prime lens and although several reviews said it's too long on the DX cameras I haven't had many situations where I can't back to the right distance. In my view, when not using a flash, a little longer distance between the camera and the target isn't critical anyway. But I'm mostly taking pictures of family and kids and staying about 15 feet away prevents the "large nose" distortions that sometimes happen by photographing a person from too close. I've used this lens inside, outside, at gymnasiums and at night on Halloween. I've taken a couple of hundred snaps with this lens since getting it. I like it a lot. It focuses quickly and accurately on my D90 even when I turn off the AF illumination. The colors are natural. I only had one lens for my D90 before getting the 50/1.4. That lens was the 16-85 Nikkor. I like the sharpness of my 16-85 and its versatility, but I leave home a lot without it after getting this lens.

Great Addition
This is a great addition to my lenses. Focus when you are clear what you focus on is clear and you can adjust further if you want after the auto-focus. I love being able to take pictures in such low light. I would recommend it after you have a good regular lens and a good telephoto lens.

Everything I expected from Nikon
I bought this lens to use as a short portrait lens.
So far, it has met my expectations.
The shallow depth of field coupled with the super sharp ED glass make for a fine lens for portraits on my Nikon D40.
There is an OBVIOUS difference in image sharpness between this lens and the kit 18-55mm lens that came with the camera.
Yes it is a little expensive, but you get what you pay for.
This is also a perfect lens for use with available light.

Best 50 yet
This is a fantastic little lens. Not the fastest AF I've ever used, but dead on accurate. Works great with my D90 and F100.

Nikon 50mm 1.4 is a Wonderful lens
I really like this lens, it is fast, it is clean and has very good color separation. I am using it on a Nikon D300 (which has a 1.5 multiplier on the the lens) so this works out to be a great portrait lens for me, I highly recommend it.

Nikon Cameras History

Nikon Corporation is one of the major companies of the Mitsubishi Group, a multinational corporation headquartered in Tokyo, Japan and specializing in optics and imaging.

Nippon Kogaku K.K., or Japanese Optical Society (afterwards became known as Nikon Corporation) was formed at July 25, 1917 as a result of merging of three firms: Tokyo Keiki Seisaku-sho's optical division, Iwaki Glass Seisaku-sho и Fujii Lens Seizo-sho. The new company was aimed at manufacturing high-quality optics for Imperial Japanese Navy. And up to 1945 it actually was their main goal that determined the company’s philosophy and traditions. The first president of Nippon Kogaku was Yoshihira Wada.

Apart from military equipment the company produced microscopes, telescopes and other measuring instruments for industry and science. From 1932 they started serial production of Nikkor lenses for photo cameras. It’s an interesting fact that all Canon cameras, launched between 1937 and 1947 were equipped with lenses produced by Nikon!

After the WW II Nippon Kogaku K.K. manufactured its own camera –a rangefinder Nikon 1 – and stopped manufacturing lenses for Canon. The new camera appeared already Nikon-branded.
