Customers Reviews 2009-11-20 A sure-thing. The digital camera nearly perfected It's a bit overwhelming when you're researching digital cameras. So many makes and models. And no one wants to get stuck with a lemon.
I think Canon has pretty much perfect the point-and-shoot digital camera. There's dedicated switches for those things needing "switching", dedicated buttons for those things needing "buttoning", etc. Go ahead, use a digital camera from 4-5 years ago when manufacturers were still figuring out what was really necessary, what users needed to get to quickly, and you'll see what I mean.
This camera is fine. Solid construction. Since you don't need anywhere near 10 megapixels, set it at 6 and you'll be happy. The menus make sense. The batteries can die when you're in East Botswania and you can replace them.
It is a TAD big for the pocket (for a guy) and it's surprisingly heavy if you're a wimp like me and have a man purse. Not "heavy" per se, just heavy enough that you definitely notice when it's not in your bag. Actually, being a little heavy in that regard could be a good thing.
So stop reading endless reviews. You have better things to do with your time. Buy this camera. Then go buy 4 rechargeable AAs and a charger for $15 from Target. Just don't drop it on the lens like I did... unless you're looking for an excuse to upgrade. | 2009-11-14 Don't Believe the Hype So I read all the reviews and looked at all the ratings on-line and figured this was the camera I needed - not too complicated, easy to use, somewhat fast pictures and would last a while. WRONG. The camera itself was easy to use, I'll give it that. But it took forever to take a picture. Case in point, every time I went to take a picture of our Yorkie, I'd get a picture of our floor - it cannot keep up with kids and pets - and you can't exactly ask a dog to "do that again." I bought this camera in January 09 and when we went on our honeymoon Oct 09 it flat out stopped working. Just froze up. Thank god we had brought my husbands waterproof pentax with us or we would have no pictures from our honeymoon. We used some of our wedding money to purchase a Nikon since then. We've used it indoors and out and had much better luck. Save your money, buy a Nikon. | 2009-11-10 Canon Powershot A1000IS Received new and in good condition. However, the first day of use the lens would not retract. I went back to the instruction booklet and did what they asked but to no avail. I ended up calling Canon and sending the camera back. I was told by a customer service rep that it was more then likely a defective item. After many phone calls and much red tape they did finally fix the camera under its warranty. | 2009-10-23 Would not recommend Canon Point and Shoot Cameras This is the third Canon I have purchased, two of which had bad LCD displays right out of the box and had to be returned. This latest one was purchased from Amazon through DBRoth who seems to be having a problem refunding my money even though they have received the returned item. Looks like I'll need to take this up with my credit card company shortly. I would not recommend either this camera or this seller and will never purchase anything from Amazon unless it is sold directly by them. | 2009-10-20 Great Camera Wonderful camera, except for the requirement to open the battery case to access the memory chip. | |

Canon Cameras HistoryCanon Corporation is a world-known manufacturer of office equipment ranging from printers and fax machines to scanners and copying machines.
The amount of photographic equipment produced by Canon is rather moderate in comparison to their other products. But it is in demand around the world. Don’t forget that it is the photographic cameras that the company began its business with.
As early as in 1933 Goro Yoshida and his brother-in-law, Sabura, founded the Precision Optical Instruments Laboratory in Tokyo. Their goal was to create a Japanese camera and make it known throughout the world. To begin with, the young people bought up and examined most advanced German models of that day. The enterprise was sponsored by Takeshi Mitarai, best friend of Uchida, a prosperous doctor, who later became president of the company.

In the following year, 1934, Japan's first domestically-made 35mm focal-plane shutter camera “was born” and was named "Kwanon" - after the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy. The trademark Canon was registered a year later.
The first consumer model Hansa Canon appeared in 1937 and the le... More About Canon Cameras |
