First Day Impressions
Got this yesterday and connected it up to my D40.

Pros: It fits well and having a place to store the Battery door is a great feature. The camera sits well in the cutout around the top of the unit. The vertical shutter button does function but it does it via IR so there is a little delay but it does function as indicated. The unit is strong and adds a good amount of body to the camera.

Cons: The unit is made of hard plastic so if you have dry hands this may be a problem for you but because of it's large size it should not be an issue. The unit does have a hole in the bottom for a tripod mount but lacks the smaller hole like the camera does have which would make the tripod mount a little less reliable. On the camera if you put a tripod mount there is an extra hole in the camera body so the tripod mount does not turn when it is on the camera. The battery holder lacks this hole but you can still screw the mount into the battery holder.

Does the job.
This grip is great if you are looking for extended battery life (and being able to use AA's in a pinch) or vertical shooting capability. Even though the trigger is essentially an IR remote, the response is quick and it works well enough for most applications.

Great idea - poor execution.
Unless your looking for just extra battery life - look at another grip. This grip works on the principal of using the IR to activate the shutter. There seems to be either too quick or too slow of an action depending on how you set your camera. It's really nothing more that the remote control you can buy. The button press is very "odd" - no depress just slightly push. You also cannot auto focus by pressing the button half way down. Once you push it - your committed to the picture. I returned the item for this principal. As a grip it is very comfortable in your hand. The extra battery life is great. Does not fit in my case.

Targus BAttery grip for NIkon D40, D40X, D60 etc.
The Targus grip matches the color & pattern of the camera exactly. It is all plastic with the battery door at one end. I feel that the door hinge would easily break if stressed so be careful when opening & closing. The tripod mount is metal and embedded in the plastic body so not sure how strong it could be. When mounted, it has to bear the weight of the camera + attached lenses so it becomes a load-bearing area. Again, if you're careful it can last for some time. Don't drop this. A metal body would probably dent but this base would shatter. Time & usage will tell. The base bulges to the front under the lens mount and backward into your palms creating a slightly awkward grip and the feeling that the base of the camera is twice as thick as the body. This "battery bulge" accomodates the battery holder. I wish the designer had made the back of the grip flatter, and made the "battery bulge" project forward under the lens. This would have provided a more supportive base and allow the camera to stand up with a lens mounted. As it is, the camera will fall forward with even a 50mm lens mounted.

Now the pro's:
1. Perfect color / pattern match
2. Snug fit; slight distinction where grip & camera meet
3. Works with 1 or 2 ELM-3, or 6 AA batteries
4. Very lightweight
5. Gives camera a more substantial feel, especially if you have large hands
6. Very inexpensive compared to the competition
7. Does what it is designed to do.
8. Vertical shutter release is optional

So that's my opinion on the Targus battery grip. It's not designed for rough handling, is a little too fat at the base, doesn't allow you to stand your camera up, but it's a great add-on, doubles your image taking fun, works well and I would recommend it to other Nikon owners. Just don't expect the strength of a full metal jacket.

Good, Almost great!
Just received my Targus Digital TG-BGD40 Battery Grip for Nikon D40/D40x/D60 today. Immediately installed it and tried its functions. Works as advertised. The texture surprisingly is almost the same with my D60. The shutter button works, but is not that responsive at times. I would not use it alot, so I don't mind at all. The size and fit is great. I just wonder why they did not cover up the tripod hole. I could see the battery from it.

Would try it tonight, and see how this works in the field. Holloween night, good timing.

Nikon Cameras History

Nikon Corporation is one of the major companies of the Mitsubishi Group, a multinational corporation headquartered in Tokyo, Japan and specializing in optics and imaging.

Nippon Kogaku K.K., or Japanese Optical Society (afterwards became known as Nikon Corporation) was formed at July 25, 1917 as a result of merging of three firms: Tokyo Keiki Seisaku-sho's optical division, Iwaki Glass Seisaku-sho и Fujii Lens Seizo-sho. The new company was aimed at manufacturing high-quality optics for Imperial Japanese Navy. And up to 1945 it actually was their main goal that determined the company’s philosophy and traditions. The first president of Nippon Kogaku was Yoshihira Wada.

Apart from military equipment the company produced microscopes, telescopes and other measuring instruments for industry and science. From 1932 they started serial production of Nikkor lenses for photo cameras. It’s an interesting fact that all Canon cameras, launched between 1937 and 1947 were equipped with lenses produced by Nikon!

After the WW II Nippon Kogaku K.K. manufactured its own camera –a rangefinder Nikon 1 – and stopped manufacturing lenses for Canon. The new camera appeared already Nikon-branded.
