my review of the Sigma 120-400mm zoom lens
Looking for the best buy for the buck to replace my old Sigma 400mm APO lens, I bought the Sigma 120-400 AF DG HSM lens. This is a large, fairly heavy lens but I use it on a homemade gunstock mount and it's not too heavy to lug around. The lens seems to be sturdy and very well built. I use it to photograph birds, mostly and the images are clear and sharp, certainly sharper than my old lens. Focusing is very quiet and fast. Since my Sony DSLR has built in image stabilization this lens does not have, or need it. That is a bonus for Sony users, because the company that sells the lens (47th St. Photo) charges about $110 less than the same lens with image stabilization for other camera mounts. Overall, I am very pleased with my purchase and I would recommend it without much reservation. Best sharpness seems to be at f8, so be sure to use a tripod or a gunstock mount because of the slower shutter speed.

Great Purchase
Haven't taken alot of shots yet but those I have taken are pretty good. The OS takes a little getting used to and I seem to get better results when I manually focus but that may be something I am doing wrong as I haven't practiced much since I got the lens. I have taken some really nice bird shots with nice sharpness. Not as big a lens as I expected and hand-holding in good light with the OS is fairly easy. Definitely recommended.

Quick way to ruin a vacation...
I have a Nikon D90 and I purchased this lens to take on an African safari. The lens had been recommended by an associate at B&H and offered a substantial value relative to Nikon 80-400mm. Initially, I was happy with the lens; there seemed to be some AF issues, but for the most part I was satisfied with the pictures (and to be honest, I wasn't sure how much of the problem was user-driven). However, on the fourth day of our trip the lens motor died, killing the AF as well as the image stabilizer, and making the lens virtually useless. That condition was short-lived as the camera soon stopped recognizing that we had a lens attached to the body at all. Fortunately I was able to return this lemon, and in the future I'm going to think twice before trading down to a non-Nikon product.

The Best & Worst Expectations
I was excited to get this new Lens I have to say overall even with the issues I had with it I like the pictures it took and the Feel of it but right out of the box
it was not working I was gettting Error "F" meaning the Lens was not connecting with the camera and it got worse as I used it more. I sent to back to Beach Camera I do miss the lens. beach went to send me a new one but it was out of stock even thought they stated they had it so they upgraded me to the 150-500mm at no cost I am very happy with beach for that. Sigma needs to get its act together on this one it is a great lens for the money and takes great pictures

A good lense
I love this lense, use it every chance I get (outdoors) typically a slow lense. I gave it 4 stars due to the fact is seems a bit contrasty to me. But all in all outdoors I love it.

Nikon Cameras History

Nikon Corporation is one of the major companies of the Mitsubishi Group, a multinational corporation headquartered in Tokyo, Japan and specializing in optics and imaging.

Nippon Kogaku K.K., or Japanese Optical Society (afterwards became known as Nikon Corporation) was formed at July 25, 1917 as a result of merging of three firms: Tokyo Keiki Seisaku-sho's optical division, Iwaki Glass Seisaku-sho ?? Fujii Lens Seizo-sho. The new company was aimed at manufacturing high-quality optics for Imperial Japanese Navy. And up to 1945 it actually was their main goal that determined the company’s philosophy and traditions. The first president of Nippon Kogaku was Yoshihira Wada.

Apart from military equipment the company produced microscopes, telescopes and other measuring instruments for industry and science. From 1932 they started serial production of Nikkor lenses for photo cameras. It’s an interesting fact that all Canon cameras, launched between 1937 and 1947 were equipped with lenses produced by Nikon!

After the WW II Nippon Kogaku K.K. manufactured its own camera –a rangefinder Nikon 1 – and stopped manufacturing lenses for Canon. The new camera appeared already Nikon-branded.
